10 Times Liars Got Called Out on Live TV

#10: Gillian McKeith
Her entire career was based on the fundamental dishonesty of claiming that she was a qualified doctor, so it was hardly surprising that mistruths marred her time on “I’m a Celebrity”. There was the infamous, fake faint, yes, but that wasn’t called out at the time. What WAS called out was her complaints about Happy Mondays frontman Shaun Ryder, because she was upset at the idea of his drinking water getting in the cooking pot after he’d been eating worms. Though he pointed out that that was days ago and they are, in fact, allowed to brush their teeth, she wasn’t having it. She was also found to have smuggled in some salt, getting the whole camp in trouble.
#9: Richard Gadd
He wasn’t on “Piers Morgan” himself to defend the allegations of lies, but was still roundly attacked for things that WERE proven to be untrue by Fiona Harvey. It’s not in doubt that Harvey was the woman “Baby Reindeer” was based on, because her distinctive tweets and Facebook posts were put into the show verbatim and easily found by online sleuths. In a tell-all interview, Harvey said that she’d never been convicted of stalking or harassing Gadd like the show – allegedly “a true story”, as Netflix declared – said, which was correct. She’s now suing Netflix, though Gadd himself has kept quiet despite all the public back-and-forth.
#8: Fiona Bruce
Ruthless economist and activist Gary Stevenson has been publicly slamming the British government and the banks for years, after he made his fortune as a trader betting on inequality to get worse under the Conservatives. In 2025, he appeared on “Question Time” to talk about how the 1% had got richer during Covid while everybody else got poorer, only to be called out by Fiona Bruce. Or rather, she ATTEMPTED to call him out, saying that she personally had not got richer under Covid and certainly not by £20,000. Except that the BBC’s salary information is public and, indeed, she had received numerous payrises in those years, and now pulls in £400,000 a year.

#7: Nicky Morgan
Then-Culture Secretary Nicky Morgan, who was already on her way out in the 2019 election since she was imminently going to stand down as an MP, was brought onto “Good Morning Britain” in place of Prime Minister Boris Johnson to talk about the Tory Party manifesto. One pledge more than any other earned attention from the media, though: the claim that the Conservatives would bring 50,000 “new nurses” to the NHS if elected. Admittedly, the entire Party peddling this line were liars, because the numbers barely made sense. They were, in fact, focusing on better retention of existing nurses, but completely misrepresented this as adding “new” nurses to the Health Service, which they weren’t doing.
#6: Jake Berry
There was a lot of dishonesty around the Post Office scandal when it finally became headline news in early 2024, and Ian Hislop was on hand to call out everybody who’d been ignoring it for years. “Private Eye” had actually been writing about the scandal for a long time, and he was brutal in his takedown of opportunistic politicians trying to jump on the story to make themselves look better. They were trying to exonerate their own parties by lying about who was really to blame, when really, the scandal had unfolded slowly under Labour, the Coalition, and the Tories by themselves. No party was untouched, and Hislop didn’t let MP Jake Berry forget it.
#5: Roxanne Pallett
While the viewing public could see from the beginning that Pallett had lied about Ryan Thomas punching her during the final series of “Celebrity Big Brother”, it wasn’t until she left the house that the penny dropped for just how much she’d ruined her own career. She was given a frosty exit interview with Emma Willis, before doing more media rounds to try and rehabilitate her reputation in the aftermath. In one memorable appearance, she tried to defend herself on “Jeremy Vine”, apologising after the public beating she’d been taking for weeks. She’s wisely left the public eye completely since then.
#4: Chris Eubank
Another bizarre “I’m a Celeb” moment, boxer Chris Eubank and Ferne McCann had to decide which team was going to get banished. Ferne from “TOWIE” announced that the purple team were going to be banished, only for Eubank to emerge from the phone box and say that he hadn’t said “purple”, he said “Duncan”. Cue an action replay from ITV that revealed that, no, he definitely did say purple. Brian Friedman then told the cameras about the miscommunication, unbeknownst to everybody that Ferne hadn’t misheard and Eubank was clearly playing some sort of game. Did he do this just to smear her? Who knows.
#3: Coleen Nolan
We don’t really know the full extent of what Coleen Nolan was lying about on “Big Brother” because, as Kim Woodburn repeatedly asserted, Channel 5 was selective about what it showed in the final episodes. She maintained in the months following the controversial series that Coleen had won by backstabbing everyone, and that it was only upon leaving that she saw exactly how Coleen was manipulating the game. She was goaded onto “Loose Women” and had a spectacular row with Coleen, accusing her of being a liar on live TV before leaving in floods of tears.
#2: Phillip Schofield
He’d already left “This Morning” by the time he was REALLY called out for his lying, in Holly Willoughby’s legendarily cringe address to the nation. In her public statement, Willoughby slammed Schofield for lying relentlessly over a period of multiple years about his illicit affair, speaking directly to the “This Morning” cameras live from the studio. The broadcaster’s handling of this scandal was weird the entire time, with a eulogy-esque announcement that he was stepping down delivered by Alison and Dermott just days before. Months on and Schofield derided the backstabbers at ITV, and presumably this live attack was one of many perceived grievances against him.
#1: Boris Johnson
He undoubtedly lied more than any other prime minister, and was often called out on those lies in various TV interviews or when he finally came up against a nationally televised select committee. The two things he lied about the most, though, were the scandals that were his ultimate downfall: Partygate and the Chris Pincher allegations. Johnson claimed that he was totally unaware that Pincher had been accused of anything, only for his “Pincher by name, pincher by nature” comments to be dragged into the public eye. A committee also found out that he HAD been lying about Downing Street parties the entire time; but remember, if you call someone a liar in parliament, you’ll get kicked out.
