Some of the most beloved games have left fans hanging with unfinished stories and unresolved mysteries. From gripping narratives to epic adventures, these titles promised so much more but never delivered a proper conclusion. Prepare to dive into the worlds of iconic games that were abruptly cut short or left without closure, sparking endless debates and hopes for a sequel that might never come.

10 Games That Never Got a Proper Conclusion

Welcome to MojoPlays, and today, we're taking a look at 10 Games That Never Got a Proper Conclusion.

Days Gone

Bend Studio's post-apocalyptic biker odyssey had everything going for it — an open world teeming with terrifying Freaker hordes, a genuinely compelling protagonist in Deacon St. John, and an ending that practically begged for a sequel. Sony reportedly passed on a follow-up despite the game eventually finding a massive audience. The credits rolled on a cliffhanger involving a government conspiracy and a potential cure for the outbreak, threads that were never picked back up. Deacon rode off into a future that, for now, exists only in fans' imaginations — and that stings more than any Freaker bite.

The Order: 1886

Few games have generated as much debate about their length as Ready at Dawn's Victorian action thriller. Across roughly six hours, players were introduced to a breathtaking alternate-history London, a mysterious half-breed war, and a Knights of the Round Table mythology rich enough to fuel an entire franchise. Then the credits rolled — abruptly, almost insultingly — with the central conflict unresolved and major antagonists still standing. A sequel was never greenlit, leaving one of gaming's most visually stunning worlds completely unexplored. The Order deserved at least one more chapter to justify its ambition.

Prey

Arkane Studios delivered one of the most intellectually daring first-person games of the last decade — and then left its story dangling in a deeply unsatisfying place. The 2017 reimagining of Prey ends with a mind-bending twist that recontextualizes everything, yet raises far more questions than it answers. What happens to Talos I? What does humanity's survival actually look like after the Typhon invasion? With Arkane's focus shifting to other projects, those questions remain unanswered. It's a universe with extraordinary potential for expansion that, frustratingly, has been left to collect cosmic dust.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II

Starkiller returned with a vengeance in this 2010 sequel — and then vanished just as quickly, leaving behind a story in absolute shambles. The game ends on a cliffhanger so dramatic it practically demands a follow-up, with Darth Vader captured and the Rebellion's future hanging in the balance. A third installment was reportedly in development before LucasArts shut down in 2013, erasing any chance of resolution. Even Starkiller's canonical status within the Star Wars universe remains murky at best. Millions of fans were left mid-sentence in a galaxy far, far away.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Adam Jensen's second outing as a mechanically augmented covert operative was supposed to be part of a larger saga — and it absolutely feels like one half of a story. Mankind Divided sets up a sprawling conspiracy involving the Illuminati, the mysterious threat known as the Orchid, and a deeply fractured society on the brink of collapse. None of it gets resolved. Square Enix shelved the franchise following disappointing sales figures, stranding Jensen mid-mission without closure. For fans of cyberpunk storytelling done right, watching this series go dark without an ending was genuinely painful.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

This one comes with a particularly brutal asterisk. Hideo Kojima's magnum opus is widely considered one of the greatest stealth games ever made — and yet it is demonstrably incomplete. Chapter Two is notably sparse, and a critical mission, "Episode 51: Kingdom of the Flies," was cut entirely before release, leaving a major storyline involving Eli and the English children frustratingly unresolved. The game's troubled development and Kojima's bitter split from Konami meant that audiences received something extraordinary but undeniably unfinished. What could have been the perfect send-off became a bittersweet reminder of what was lost.

Mirror's Edge Catalyst

Faith Connors deserved better. DICE's parkour-driven reboot expanded the Mirror's Edge universe with a more detailed open city, richer lore, and a deeper look at the corporate dystopia oppressing its runners. The game ends with the seeds of a revolution planted but never blossoming, and supporting characters whose arcs clearly pointed toward future entries. A sequel never materialized, leaving Faith frozen mid-leap above a city that had so much more story to tell. Given how unique the Mirror's Edge formula remains in gaming, its abandonment feels like one of the industry's most underappreciated creative losses.

Beyond Good & Evil

Few games carry as much mythological weight among devoted fans as Michel Ancel's 2003 cult classic. Jade's journey to expose the alien conspiracy behind the DomZ ended on an enormous cliffhanger, with the story clearly designed to continue across sequels. A follow-up, Beyond Good & Evil 2, has been in development at Ubisoft for over a decade — its scope ballooning to near-impossible ambition — while the original's conclusion remains stranded in limbo. With Ancel's departure from the industry in 2020, the future of the franchise is cloudier than ever. Jade is still waiting, and so are we.

Shenmue III

Ryo Hazuki's quest for revenge against Lan Di is one of gaming's longest-running sagas — and after eighteen years, the crowdfunded Shenmue III still couldn't close it out. Rather than delivering a satisfying conclusion, the third entry felt like a bridge chapter, ending just as the story began accelerating toward its climax. Yu Suzuki has expressed interest in continuing with a fourth game, but with no confirmed backing and a niche audience, that prospect feels distant at best. Shenmue III gave devoted fans a taste of closure without ever swallowing — an act of literary cruelty dressed up as a comeback.

Half-Life 2: Episode Two

No unfinished story in gaming history has haunted players quite like this one. Valve's episodic follow-up to Half-Life 2 ended in 2007 with a gut-punch of a cliffhanger — one of gaming's most shocking character deaths and the arrival of an overwhelming alien threat — all while Gordon Freeman stood silent, as always. Episode Three was never made. The long-promised Half-Life 3 became an internet myth. Valve's shift away from single-player storytelling left millions of fans in a suspension that has now lasted nearly two decades. Gordon Freeman may never speak, but the deafening silence around Episode Three speaks volumes.
