10 Darkest Things Celebs Revealed During Interviews
10 Darkest Reveals During Celebrity Interviews
Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re looking at celebrity sit-downs that took an infamous turn into uncomfortable personal confessions.
Paris Jackson
It’s safe to say that the daughter of late pop icon Michael Jackson didn’t have a simple childhood. Hopes were raised by Paris Jackson’s transition from socialite to actress and musician, then complicated by her 2026 appearance on Jay Shetty’s podcast “On Purpose.” She was already open about sharing her father’s mental health struggles. But this particular conversation went deeper into her substance use and multiple attempts to take her own life as a teenager. This led to a stint in a psychiatric care center that reportedly exacerbated the trauma, with some patients experiencing severe abuse. As Jackson continued to elaborate on these long-held secrets in other interviews, she built a narrative for young people that’s both disturbing and resilient.
Drew Barrymore
This former child star’s case of early and severe substance use is one of the most notorious in modern Hollywood. In a 2021 appearance on “The Howard Stern Show,” she disputed the newer image of health spas for elite patients. Back when she was 13, her mother had her committed to a Van Nuys psychiatric ward for 18 months of restraint and intensive rehab. Barrymore had downplayed these details in previous accounts, only now expressing forgiveness for how her mother handled the “monster” she created. The actress not only shirks self-pity, but feels that cases like hers warrant extreme treatment. Audiences just didn’t know how extreme it got.
Justin Bieber
One of the biggest teen idols of his day ended his teens with a shocking crashout. Justin Bieber signaled a 2019 comeback by gracing the cover of Vogue with new wife Hailey, and an interview detailing his fall from grace. Fame at such a young age developed a mix of ego and serious depression that led to reckless behavior. Bieber’s self-medication got so bad that security would regularly check his pulse at night to make sure he didn’t overdose. Public perceptions of this polished or arrogant pop star were suddenly humbled by a confession that was edgier than anything the tabloids reported. Bieber is in a better place now, with more transparency about the burdens of fame.
Jennette McCurdy
This Nickelodeon veteran emerged from hiatus for a one-woman show and a memoir with a headline-grabbing title: “I’m Glad My Mom Died.” In 2021, Jennette McCurdy gave People magazine a sneak peek of her late mother’s domineering treatment of a child actress. This included invasive physical exams, forbidding solo showers, and fostering an eating disorder. Suddenly, the family-friendly sitcoms “iCarly and “Sam & Cat” were reframed by revelations of child abuse. McCurdy would not be the last person to raise allegations of misconduct on the set of these shows. She’d also continue to share her childhood trauma as a multimedia storyteller, with no shortage of shocking accounts of cruelty in show business.

Liam Neeson
After so many action thrillers, Liam Neeson separated revenge fantasy from reality during a 2019 interview with The Independent. He explained that during the Troubles in Belfast, word spread of a female friend being sexually assaulted by a Black man. Neeson then spent weeks patrolling the Black community with a club and violent intent, until he realized how twisted that mindset was. This bold confession sparked debate over whether it soured the actor’s image or honestly faced the process of overcoming racism. Neeson stood by his story throughout the promotional tour for “Cold Pursuit,” seeing his mistakes as a lesson in blind hatred and violence. It may look cool in his movies, but the subject should remain uncomfortable in the real world.
Angelina Jolie
Sitting down with IMDb in 2001, Angelina Jolie opened up about a history of depression that nearly ended her career just as it was beginning. At age 22, she allegedly tried to put out a murder contract on herself. She believed that staging a fatal robbery would be less devastating to loved ones than if she personally acted on her ideation. Jolie credited the hitman’s initial reluctance with forcing her to reevaluate her will to live. She would go on to build an iconic career and family, while occasionally bringing up the fabled hitman. However reliable this wild story is, it at least demonstrates how even the most glamorous idols deal with despair.
Shia LaBeouf
As infamous as his personal crises were by 2014, Shia LaBeouf shared a particularly disturbing episode in an email interview with Dazed. Earlier that year, he staged a performance art piece titled “#IAMSORRY” at the Cohen Gallery in L.A. An unidentified woman was one of many people encouraged to taunt and strike LaBeouf as he stood silently with a bag over his head. But she had to be ejected from the gallery as she began to sexually assault him. Multiple colleagues corroborated this story and the deep psychological trauma LaBeouf suffered. He completed his six-day exhibit anyway. LaBeouf is undoubtedly a committed artist, but his frankness about his public image and dehumanization is no less thought-provoking.
Demi Lovato
The pop world was devastated when the Disney-bred superstar Demi Lovato suffered a near-fatal overdose in 2018. The album “Dancing with the Devil” marked a triumphant comeback three years later, but the namesake companion docuseries explained what exactly she was coming back from. Lovato’s overdose was so severe that it caused three strokes, a heart attack and permanent brain damage. Moreover, her dealer took advantage of her during the episode before leaving her for dead. Her assistant got her to the doctors, who estimated that Lovato had five to ten minutes to live. This candor made her recovery seem even more miraculous, but it's still tough to hear.
Sinéad O'Connor
A 2017 interview with Dr. Phil McGraw braved the depths of singer Sinéad O'Connor’s trauma like never before. She graphically described growing up in “a torture chamber” under her abusive mother. The effort to degrade O’Connor’s femininity supported her decision to shave her head as an act of defiance. She would nonetheless be so distressed in her mental and physical health that she made eight attempts to end her life in one year. Appearing on “Dr. Phil” was an attempt to destigmatize discussing these struggles after a meltdown video on Facebook went viral. O’Connor later condemned McGraw for sending her to an inadequate psychiatric facility. At least the troubled artist’s unflinching on-camera confession brought greater visibility to her burdens.
Stephen Collins
Everyone’s wholesome image of “7th Heaven” star Stephen Collins was shattered in 2014 by accusations of sexual misconduct. This was supported by leaked audio of a couples counseling session in which he admitted to the act. So in an exclusive statement to People magazine, Collins confirmed his abuse of three underage girls between 1973 and 1994. Rarely has a celebrity been so open about doing something so horrible. Collins asserted his regret for his actions, and wanted to correct any “assumptions and innuendos.” The confession in fact ended his career on the spot, leaving behind a legacy tarnished by radical honesty. Still, sometimes the most disturbing truth about a public figure needs to be heard.
