Vietnam War: History and Key Dates
VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton
The Vietnam War was the longest and one of the most unpopular wars in the history of the United States. One of the main goals of this war was to fight the spread of communism. At first, the United States had the support of its public. However as the war waged for years, that support dropped off and morphed into open hostility towards the government. Peace protests became commonplace on American soil, while in Vietnam increasing numbers of U.S. soldiers were dying. Finally the U.S. ended its involvement in the conflict, and the war finished with the communists taking control of the country.
