Formed in 1987 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, The Roots are a hip hop band that made a name for themselves through their live shows. They are also known for their incorporation of soul, jazz and funk into their musical sound. After reaching critical and commercial success throughout the 2000s, The Roots took on a gig as the house band for the television program "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" near the end of the decade and this has brought them new-found popularity.
