#20: Finn Wolfhard’s Zac Efron Impression
Finn Wolfhard surprised audiences on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon by launching into an enthusiastic impression of Troy Bolton, Zac Efron’s breakout character from High School Musical. Rather than brushing it off as a joke, he committed fully, complete with vocal inflection and exaggerated earnestness. The moment escalated as his castmates joined in, revealing a shared affection for the mid-2000s Disney phenomenon. What made it work was the lack of irony. These were young actors from a prestige series openly celebrating something nostalgic and uncool by design. The impression wasn’t about mocking the movie. It was about shared memory, comfort viewing, and the kind of pop culture touchstones that bond people long before fame enters the picture.
#19: Winona Ryder Reacts
Winona Ryder unintentionally became the breakout star of the 2017 Screen Actors Guild Awards while standing behind David Harbour during Stranger Things’ acceptance speech. As Harbour launched into an impassioned, anti-cynicism monologue, cameras caught Ryder cycling through a rapid-fire series of expressions: confusion, delight, concern, admiration, and visible calculation as if she were actively processing every word in real time. Viewers debated whether she was worried, impressed, amused, or simply caught off guard, and the ambiguity only made it funnier. Ryder later acknowledged she hadn’t known what Harbour was going to say, which explained her candid reactions. The moment became iconic because it was unfiltered, human, and completely unplanned.
#18: An Unexpected Bromance
During the Season 4 press tour, Joseph Quinn and Jamie Campbell Bower developed one of the most unexpectedly entertaining interview pairings. In multiple appearances, particularly Brazilian interviews, the two routinely derailed standard promotional questions with inside jokes, exaggerated reactions, and playful chaos. Their rapport felt truly spontaneous, a sharp contrast to the tightly managed nature of most press junkets. What made it especially amusing was that their characters barely intersected in the show, yet off-camera they behaved like longtime friends. Fans latched onto the unpredictability. No one knew where the interviews were going, including the interviewers. It turned routine publicity into must-watch content, and made fans wonder if they had a new Joe/Gaten on their hands.
#17: A Hot Ones Cameo
Millie Bobby Brown’s appearance on Hot Ones took an unexpectedly wholesome turn when she unexpectedly brought Noah Schnapp out. Schnapp immediately slipped into a sibling-like role: encouraging her, teasing her, and laughing openly as the spice levels took their toll. The dynamic felt effortless, rooted in years of shared history as opposed to press-tour choreography. What made the moment resonate was how it stripped away the polished interview veneer. Brown didn’t need to power through alone, and Schnapp wasn’t there to promote anything. It was a quiet display of trust and camaraderie that reminded audiences how close the original cast remains off-screen.
#16: Lie Detector Test
Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton’s Vanity Fair segment delivered humor through discomfort — not spectacle. As a real-life couple known for guarding their privacy, the two navigated questions about habits, honesty, and their relationship with visible nervousness. Awkward pauses, nervous laughter, and evasive answers became part of the appeal, especially as the polygraph results occasionally contradicted their responses. The test never felt exploitative because neither actor leaned into theatrics. Instead, the humor came from understatement and restraint. Viewers responded to how human it felt: two people trying to be polite, honest, and composed under an inherently strange premise. It stood out precisely because it resisted viral exaggeration.
#15: Settling for Cereal
Joe Keery and Gaten Matarazzo’s running Twitter gag about missing reservations at chain restaurants became unexpectedly iconic. Over a series of deadpan posts, the two lamented being late for Outback Steakhouse and IHOP reservations, treating the non-events with exaggerated seriousness. The bit escalated slowly, eventually ending with them “settling” for cereal at home. What made it so charming was how aggressively low-stakes it was. There was no punchline being sold, no product tie-in, and no explanation for newcomers. Fans were simply invited to observe two friends amusing themselves online. In an era of heavily curated celebrity social media, the commitment to something so pointless felt refreshing and oddly intimate.
#14: The Upside Downs Motown Group
When Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Finn Wolfhard, and Noah Schnapp appeared on The Late Late Show with James Corden, few — and by “few,” we mean “no one” — expected them to break into a polished Motown-style performance. Billed as a fictional group called “The Upside Downs,” the four launched into The Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back,” committing fully to choreography, harmonies, and stage presence. What started as a novelty bit quickly became impressive, especially given McLaughlin’s standout vocals and the group’s visible chemistry. The moment worked because it balanced irony with sincerity. They weren’t mocking the format. They were embracing it. Watching the cast confidently perform together reinforced how close-knit the younger actors had become after growing up on the same set.
#13: Vecna Breaks a Smile
Seeing Jamie Campbell Bower laugh while fully suited up as Vecna was both hilarious and oddly reassuring. The Season 4 bloopers captured the actor breaking character mid-take, his normal speaking voice and warm laugh clashing hard with the nightmarish prosthetics wrapped around him. After months of interviews emphasizing the physical and emotional toll of playing Stranger Things’ most terrifying villain, the moment humanized the performance instantly. It showed how humor became a release valve for a role that required hours in makeup and intense psychological focus. Fans loved the contrast: the show’s embodiment of evil undone by a simple laugh. It didn’t diminish Vecna’s menace onscreen. If anything, it highlighted just how impressive the transformation really was.
#12: Maya Hawke & Joe Keery Can’t Keep It Together
The Season 4 blooper reel offered plenty of laughs, but few moments matched the simplicity and chaos of Maya Hawke and Joe Keery getting stuck on a single word. While filming a scene together, the two actors fell into a loop of repeating a certain, particularly juvenile word, each attempt to reset only making things worse. Their shared inability to keep a straight face turned a throwaway mistake into a full-blown breakdown. The humor came from how low-effort the joke was, contrasted with how completely it derailed them. By this point in the series, Hawke and Keery had developed such an easy rhythm that even nonsense could spiral into comedy. It was a reminder that their beloved on-screen chemistry is rooted in genuine comfort and playfulness.
#11: Is Joe Pregnant?
During a Wired Autocomplete Interview with Joe Keery, Gaten Matarazzo completely collapsed with laughter after reading the absurd search query “Is Joe pregnant?”. The moment spiraled instantly, with Gaten sliding out of his chair while Joe tried and failed to keep things together. It went viral because it perfectly encapsulated their off-screen dynamic: effortless, juvenile, and totally unforced. Nothing felt rehearsed. It was simply two friends cracking up at the internet being the internet. For fans, it cemented why the Dustin–Steve pairing works so well: genuine affection, bad jokes, and zero self-consciousness.
#10: Making a Burrito With Stephen Colbert
Eleven’s favorite snack food might be Eggo waffles, but in this sketch on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” from September of 2016, Millie Bobby Brown helps the host cook up a meal of his own. In a spoof of the scenes from the show that take place in the Hawkins Laboratory before Eleven escaped, Millie uses her telekinetic abilities to heat up a burrito for Colbert and deliver it to his plate. Colbert plays the role of Eleven’s creepy “Papa”, and manages to bring light to a situation which would otherwise be totally sinister.
#9: Chocolate Daddy Meme
These kids sure know how to have fun together! In a September 2016 interview with “E!”, Millie Bobby Brown, Caleb McLaughlin and Gaten Matarazzo are discussing their newfound internet fame. They touch on what it has been like to receive attention from some of their favorite celebrities, but also get into a discussion on meme culture. Caleb at one point brings up the “chocolate daddy” meme that was created in his honor. He admits that he perpetuated it himself and that “chocolate daddy” is a nickname he gave himself. When the other two chime in with him, it’s almost too cute to handle.
#8: MTV Movie Awards & TV Awards Speech
At the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards, “Stranger Things” was honored with one of the biggest awards of the night- Show of the Year. Earlier in the evening, Millie Bobby Brown had already taken home the statue for Best Actor in a Show, but this time the whole cast was able to take the stage to receive the accolade together. You can tell the kids have a nervous energy about them when they each take a turn with the mic, making sure to thank The Duffer Brothers, Netflix and of course their parents, who are watching from the crowd.
#7: Reacting to VR
Considering the scary nature of “Stranger Things” and the tender age of the primary cast members, it should come as no surprise that people want to freak them out. While they’re acting, they don’t get the full experience of seeing the CGI and special effects, so Netflix gave them VR headsets so they could fully immerse themselves in the horrifying world of Hawkins. Even though we can’t see what they’re seeing, it’s hilarious to watch their reactions to whatever it is that’s happening. And this isn’t the only time we’ve gotten a laugh at their expense...
#6: Stranger Strings
When the cast appeared on Jimmy Fallon in 2016, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlinand Finn Wolfhard made it quite the memorable episode. They started off by discussing the kiss between Eleven and Mike, which the two participating actors had quite different experiences with. Then they went on to play a game called “stranger strings” where they were each armed with a can of silly string, and had to reveal embarrassing facts about themselves. Millie Bobby Brown was the star of the show (as always) when she regaled the crowd with her Nicki Minaj impression.
#5: Handing Out PB&J
At the 2016 Primetime Emmys, Jimmy Kimmel was playing host, and decided to involve the kids of “Stranger Things” in the most appropriate fashion. Knowing the attendees would be hungry, he organized for his mom to make just about 7 thousand peanut butter and jelly sandwiches so that the guests could have a little snack part way through the night. Who better to ask to make the deliveries than the young “Stranger Things” castmembers? But wait...shouldn’t they have been handing out Eggos?
#4: Barb’s “Return”
Jimmy Fallon clearly loves “Stranger Things”, because he has taken the opportunity to involve the show in several different skits. In this one, he puts together a recreation of a scene from “Stranger Things” but adds a hilarious twist. Barb was the unsung hero of the series, a minor character who ended up with a serious following. In this sketch, Tonight Show writer A.D. Miles plays her in a faux deleted scene where she comes back from the Upside Down to give hell to the kids who left her there.#3: Lip Sync Battle
For any young actor these days, participating in a Lip Sync Battle is practically a rite of passage. While Millie Bobby Brown wasn’t present for this one, all four boys took part in a competition to see who could impress the audience. Each of their performances was distinct and each seemed better than the last. Watching the other cast members look on as one of them performed showed just how tight this crew is. Caleb McLaughlin was declared the winner, but in the end it really felt like they were all in it together. And seeing Chrissy Teigen dressed as Barb was enough to put this episode over the edge.
#2: Dancing at the Emmys
“Stranger Things” may not taken home any actual awards at the 2016 Primetime Emmys, but the cast definitely won for most charming live performance. Before the broadcast actually began, Millie Bobby Brown, Caleb McLaughlin and Gaten Matarazzo performed their own rendition of Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ hit song, “Uptown Funk”. The song wasn’t initially televised, but luckily several versions hit the web not long afterwards. What do you think our odds are of getting a “Stranger Things” musical episode? These kids clearly have enough talent to carry it!
#1: The 74th Annual Golden Globes Opening
When Jimmy Fallon hosted the Golden Globe Awards in early 2017, his opening number was one of the most memorable in recent years. The whole piece was “La La Land” themed, with stars from all of the years biggest TV and movie hits making appearances. The highlight though was definitely when the back of a truck opened up and the “Stranger Things” kids were inside in what looked like the set of the show, and Millie Bobby Brown gave a rap performance about her character. Can someone give this girl a musical career already?
