Travel Guide: Regions and Districts of Stockholm

The districts of this Scandinavian city vary from quaintly ancient to fabulously modern. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’ll be checking out some of the districts and regions of Stockholm, Sweden.

Full of Beautiful Spots

Stockholm is built across a series of islands, and is divided into a number of interesting boroughs, regions and districts. While many of the most popular tourist attractions are found in the inner city area, others are found throughout the city in suburban and more rural areas as well.

Skärgård

Skärgård, or the Stockholm Archipelago, is one such location. This grouping of islands just off the coast of Stockholm is great for boat-lovers, as travelers can easily visit between the islands via a cruise ship during warm months.

Riddarholmen

Riddarholmen is an islet that makes up part of Gamla Stan. One of its most notable tourist attractions is the Riddarholmen Church, which is found near the Stockholm Palace. This is one of the oldest constructions in the city. Tourists are also partial to the stunning waterfront views that are offered from certain spots in this district, as well as the historic Birger Jarls public square. The Swedish House of Nobility is also found in Riddaholmen, and is considered by some as one of the most stunning pieces of architecture in all of northern Europe.

Södermalm

Södermalm is another beautiful district in Stockholm, and it connects to Gamla Stan via Slussen. This area is densely-populated and features a spectacular church as one of its most famous landmarks. The Katarina Church has been rebuilt several times, but was originally built at the end of the 1600s. Today it stands as a beautiful example of architecture, and an important place to visit in Södermalm.

Hammarby Sjöstad

Hammarby Sjöstad is a city by the sea, and is part of Södermalm. This region has been undergoing an overhaul in recent years, and it has become a modern-looking urban neighborhood right on the water.

Skeppsbron

Also found on the water is Skeppsbron. This name refers to both the street and the harbor front area, and is found within the Old Town. This thoroughfare is home to some popular city sites, and is a beautiful example of the idyllic views afforded from many spots in Stockholm.
