Travel Guide: Stockholm, Sweden’s Royal Game Park: Djurgården

This Scandinavian spot draws both tourists and locals alike with its activities and natural beauty. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’ll be learning more about Stockholm, Sweden’s Royal Game Park.

Djurgården

Located near the centre of Stockholm is Djurgården. This lush green island is filled with parks, museums, historical buildings and harbors, with its multitude of activities and recreational pursuits. In fact, over 10 million people visit the island each year. Sightseers can reach the park on foot, by tram or by boat.

The Vasa Museum

The Vasa Museum is found on Djurgården and is Scandinavia’s most visited museum. Over one million people annually travel to this cultural attraction to learn about the region’s maritime history. The outside of the building features a magnificently restored ship, with its masts lining the roof.

Gröna Lund

One of the island’s most popular attractions is Gröna Lund, and this name translates to “the green grove.” Opened in the 1880s, this is the oldest amusement park in Sweden, and its traditional charm is evident everywhere. Despite the small size of the park, it features hours of fun for the whole family. The park features over 30 attractions, from thrilling roller coasters to other fair rides. Some of the tallest rides offer spectacular views of the surrounding park and island, and this is a great way to view the city. The park is open from late April until early September, and has also become famous for the musical concerts that are played there.

Skansen

Skansen is an open-air museum also located on Djurgården. As it was founded around the same time as Gröna Lund, it is the oldest open-air museum in the world. This is another spot that’s perfect for a family trip: While Skansen features a zoo full of friendly, Nordic animals, it also showcases what life was like in the area before industry took over. Old farm houses were transported from their original locations to this park as symbols of history.
