The Top 10 Conspiracies of All Time

From aliens to assassinations, there will always be people to question the truth. Welcome to, and today we’ll be counting down the Top 10 conspiracy theories of all time.

10 - Celebrity deaths

Long-lasting celebrity conspiracy theories often involved their deaths. According to some, Beatles’ rocker Paul McCartney died in 1966, and was replaced by a look- and sound-alike. After Elvis Presley died in 1977, tabloids and Elvis fans were convinced he had faked his death and was alive and well. If you’re lucky, maybe you too will meet The King.

9 - Chemtrails

Believers of the Chemtrail conspiracy have said that traces left in the sky by some airplanes are actually biological or chemical agents being sprayed on the public. Some suspected biological warfare as a motive, while others hypothesized population or even weather control. Officials said the trails were normal aircraft exhaust. However, vocal opposers like Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan have maintained that the government is trying to kill us.

8 - 2004 Tsunami

On December 26th, 2004, a tsunami devastated South Asia. Most people chalked this disaster up to Mother Nature gone wild, but some suspected something more nefarious. A military experiment by either the U.S. or another world government was to blame. Whether the motives were based on oil, mass human extermination or they were simply concerned with seeing the effects of a disaster on the earth, this conspiracy theory has gained traction.

7 - Philadelphia Experiment

In 1943, an experiment allegedly took place in Pennsylvania that rendered the USS Eldridge invisible. Using electromagnetism, the ship was cloaked from enemies. However, the experiment went wrong, and it caused injuries and illnesses to many crew members who were on board. Some have suggested that to maintain the silence surrounding the project, those involved were brainwashed into secrecy.

6 - Manufactured diseases

It is often suggested that Big Pharma has kept the public sick purely for the profits. According to this conspiracy theory, a cure for cancer is kept secret. Even worse, Big Pharma has been charged with manufacturing serious diseases like AIDS. The vaccination debate is another offshoot of this theory: some people have connected vaccinations with medical issues, like autism.

5 - Princess Diana was murdered

Shortly after Princess Diana was killed in a car crash on August 31st, 1997, conspiracy theories emerged suggesting she had been murdered. In fact, the father of Diana’s traveling companion Dodi Al-Fayed, suggested the assassination had been carried out by British Intelligence at the behest of the Royal Family themselves, though inquests into the charge came up empty.

4 - Aliens on Earth

Roswell and Area 51 are both inextricably linked to the idea of alien life on earth. Supposedly, in 1947, an alien spacecraft crashed in Roswell, New Mexico. Later, the debris from this ship was taken to Area 51, where alien autopsies and reverse engineering of the spacecraft took place. The U.S. government denied the existence of Area 51 until July 14th, 2003, but there is no doubt it is the world’s most famous top secret military base.

3 - Moon Landing

Apollo 11 astronauts first walked on the moon on July 21st, 1969, however – according to some – it was faked by NASA. Proposed motives for this elaborate hoax included the Space Race against the Soviet Union, an attempt to ensure NASA kept its funding, or as a diversion for the American people from the Vietnam War. Despite proof brought back by the astronauts, this conspiracy has lingered.

2 - JFK

On November 22nd, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was shot and killed during a motorcade through Dallas, Texas. Officially, his killer was Lee Harvey Oswald. However, was there a second shooter on the grassy knoll? Was Oswald part of a conspiracy? Who ordered the assassination? Was the CIA involved? The Secret Service? Or was it the Cubans or the Soviets? The Warren Commission found that Oswald acted alone; we might never know the truth for sure.

1 - 9/11 was an inside job

When the Twin Towers fell on September 11th, 2001, a voracious conspiracy theory was initiated. Some believed the U.S. government had fair warning about the attacks, and that these warnings were ignored by the Bush administration so they would have a motive for initiating wars in the Middle East. This 9/11 Truth Movement did not believe the official inquiry into 9/11, and maintained that the World Trade Center should not have collapsed.
