Top 5 Celebs Who Own Their Own Private Island

As the old adage goes, if you have money, buy islands. Okay we just made that up... but these celebrities definitely took it to heart. Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top 5 Celebs Who Own Their Own Private Island.
For this list, we’ll be looking at famous people who have used their many riches to buy themselves their own little bit of paradise.

#5: Leonardo DiCaprio

It’s no secret that Leo is one of the biggest environmental activists in Hollywood. As such, it should come as no surprise that he actually purchased a small island in Belize, Blackadore Caye, with the vision of turning it into a restorative island. In case you’re not fluent in “green speak”, restorative development is a philosophy of meeting human needs in ways that not only preserves natural ecosystems, but also helps undo the damage already done by mankind. While it is still under construction as of early 2017, the island will eventually be home to a world-class eco-resort, powered entirely by renewable energy, as well as a climate change research station and various restorative projects.

#4: Shakira

With a net worth in the hundreds of millions, how could Shakira not own her own island? Well, technically... the Colombian singer-songwriter co-owns an island, known as Bonds Cay, with Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters and fellow Spanish singer Alejandro Sanz. Their plan is reportedly to turn the land into a resort for the rich and famous. The island is home to five beaches, three bays and an array of beautiful waterfalls. The dream also includes building a retreat for artists’ - a place where creative types can take up residence and share ideas. Located in the Bahamas, the island reportedly cost $16 million.

#3: Johnny Depp

It would appear that Depp enjoyed playing a pirate marooned on an island, as he went out and bought himself not one... but two. In 2004, he purchased Little Hall’s Pond Cay, an island located in the Bahamas, to which he later reportedly added the Greek island of Strongyli in 2015. While he lays claim to both, it’s his Bahamas getaway that is the most developed. Featuring six beaches, named after his ex-partner, children and late friends Marlon Brando and Hunter S. Thompson, the cay is a vision of Caribbean beauty. From snorkeling with barracudas to riding his 156-foot yacht, Depp has no shortage of things to do. We certainly wouldn’t mind getting shipwrecked there.

#2: Richard Branson

When you’re one of the richest people on the planet, private islands likely seem a foregone conclusion. Like Depp, British businessman and philanthropist Richard Branson has multiple. The islands of Necker and Mosquito are both part of the British Virgin Islands located in the Caribbean, and while the latter will eventually become a luxury resort, Necker Island is where Branson lays his head. The magnificent getaway doubles as a resort and is loaded with exactly the kinds of amenities you’d expect from a billionaire owner: snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, tennis, and zip lining are just some of the things to do on island. If interested, start saving now... rooms are NOT cheap.

#1: David Copperfield

When not dazzling the world with his mind-bending illusions, magician David Copperfield is likely to be found relaxing at Musha Cay, his own private paradise. Located in the southern Bahamas, this collection of 11 islands was reportedly purchased by Copperfield for the tidy sum of $50 million in 2006. Since then, Copperfield has worked to create what he calls “the most magical vacation destination in the world.” Musha Cay and the Islands of Copperfield Bay feature a little bit of everything, from beachside beds and an outdoor theatre to hiking trails and white sand beaches. Rates start… at $39,000. Now if only we all could make money appear the way Copperfield does.
