Video Game Addictions: World of WarCraft Some games are too addictive to put down. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’ll be taking a look at the online phenomenon World of WarCraft. Developed by Blizzard Entertainment and released in 2004, the game is available exclusively for the computer and is a massively multiplayer online role-playing experience. Earning a Guinness World Record for being the most popular game of its kind, it has since captivated well over 12 million paying subscribers. Despite its age, it has stayed fresh by receiving various game expansions and updates. Popularized with a blitz of marketing campaigns featuring celebrities like William Shatner and Mr. T, the game has sucked in countless players with its unparalleled emphasis on customization, social interaction, adventure, and leveling-up. As a sequel to the previous real-time strategy games within the WarCraft universe, this game takes the franchise in a completely new direction. Set four years after the conclusion of the third game “The Frozen Throne”, “World of WarCraft” is similarly set in the fantasy world of Azeroth and its various surrounding lands. This time, the shaky peace that once kept all of the many races united has shattered. The lands have once again become a battlefield to be conquered and ruled. At the start of your quest, you must customize your very own avatar, selecting its appearance and abilities. At the same time, you must choose which faction you wish to be allied with. These choices include the Alliance and the Horde. As with other role-playing adventures, you begin by setting off to explore the vast unending landscape, combat monsters, complete side-quests and forge many relationships with other players and game spites. Earning experience points and in-game money, players will eventually unlock new areas to come across text segments and scripted events that expand upon the story. Eventually, players must form large groups if they wish to have any chance at completing their adventures. When killed, you are resurrected and can make use of vehicles and portals to quickly find your way back to the point where you died. Interestingly, the game also breaks with conventions by recognizing seasonal events from the real world and replicating them. These include annual events such as Halloween and Christmas. With three expansions having been released to date, most recently with Cataclysm, players have continued to flock for the chance to explore new areas and content; while others have sold their game characters for significant real-world cash. Continuing to not only be a major source of satire, the game has appeared in pop culture countless times and is showing no signs of losing the interest of its many fans.
