Top 5 Reasons PUBG Is the Biggest Game of 2017 “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds” has become a gaming phenomenon… here’s why. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’re counting down our picks for the top five reasons why “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds” is the biggest game of 2017. For this list, we’ll be discussing why we believe that the game has grown so popular in recent months.

#5: Survival Shooter Condensed

“PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds” is a survival shooter. That said, there are countless survival shooters on the market, so what made this one stand out? Well, it’s mostly due to its condensed and streamlined gameplay approach. Popular survival shooters like “DayZ” and “Rust” take a long time to build momentum, and most of the gameplay consists of preparing for the action. “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds” offers players a condensed process of spawning, surviving, gearing up, and fighting, giving the game a faster pace and providing very little downtime. While there’s nothing wrong with suspenseful waiting and strategic planning, “Battlegrounds” appeals to the demographic who are turned off by that aspect of the genre.

#4: Forces Teamplay, For Real Though…

Even mega-popular “team-based” multiplayer games like “League of Legends” and “Overwatch” are relatively forgiving to those lone wolves who are good enough. If you can stay alive and keep getting kills, hey, more power to you. If you do that in this game, you will die, and die quickly. More so than any other game, PUBG forces you to be in constant communication with your team, as you need to call out enemy positions and plan your next move to the circle. It encourages teamwork and communication, and there’s nothing more satisfying than making new friends and conquering the battleground together.

#3: The Unscripted Moments

As much as we love cinematic games like “Uncharted 4” there’s nothing better than a heart-pounding unscripted moment. While the game’s design and execution are relatively simple and straightforward, the mechanics allow for an endless amount of insane and unexpected moments, all of which inevitably end up on a YouTube highlight reel. Players are always discovering new and exciting tricks, and the game is full of wild and crazy moments that could never have been planned. There’s just nothing better than when everything goes hilariously wrong - or, for that matter, when everything goes beautifully right.

#2: It Taps Into Our Morbid Fascination

While the gameplay is fun and the moments wacky, there’s something inherently interesting about this game which that keeps us coming back, and that could be our morbid fascination with the “humans hunting each other” genre. There are many successful stories out there which taps into the theme: “Battle Royale,” “The Hunger Games,” “The Running Man,” and basically any slasher movie. We just love the concept of humans hunting each other, as morbid as that is. Not to mention that hunting down and defending yourself from your fellow man is about as intense a situation as you can get. It makes for a great video game.

#1: Streamers

Streamers are undoubtedly the biggest factor in this game’s widespread success. Matches are incredibly fun to watch because, as we mentioned, the game’s concept makes for fantastic entertainment. By watching other players have fun, those who tune in for the streams are more likely to buy the game and try it out for themselves. They end up liking it, and through word of mouth, they get their friends hooked, too. Streaming is one of the cheapest forms of marketing, and “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds” took full advantage of it – and it’s paid off.
