It may be animated but true anime is more that just a cartoon. Join http://www.WatchMojo.com as we count down the Top 10 Reasons Anime Deserves Respect. For this list we are looking all the reasons people enjoy anime and reasons why we think it should be more respected outside of its core community.

#10: Visually Appealing Storytelling

You may end up staying for a series’ gripping story or relatable characters, but the first thing anyone will notice about anime is the animation. At first animestyle animation might come off as cheap or simple, it’s evolved into a way to tell a story and express emotion in a way that traditional cinematography doesn’t consider. Whether it’s grand vistas and surreal locations, to action sequences so intense they speak for themselves anime is fun and beauty without a budget on imagination, which means the sky’s the limit. Even settings like a simple high-school can be beautifully rendered and bought to life in a way that live-action storytelling can’t.

#9: Many Types of Heroes

Top 10 Anime Heroes Who Gave Into Darkness

The humble farm boy from the countryside and the vile emperor who slaughtered thousands; what do they have in common? Well in anime they could both end up with the same job: saving the world. In anime, heroes can come from anywhere and have any kind of motivation. You’ll find a lot of hero-variety here, as champions of justice can be anyone from an honorable warrior to a devilishly sadistic vampire. Also, as animated character don’t have to age, voice actors can inhabit a role a lot longer than they can in traditional life action series, and thus characters can evolve, grow and be with us for generations without feeling like they are being milked for all they’re worth.

#8: Mature Stories

Also in:

Top 10 Mature Anime Series

Life is full of harsh realities. Anime never pull its punches when it comes to mature storytelling, and complex and mature themes can be found in everyanime genre. Whether it’s a high school romance that takes a dark twist or a high-octane mecha series that makes you question life as we know it. Animeisn’t afraid of taboo, and while it may look like it caters to a young audience, it never hesitates to put children into hellish, psychological situations. Series like Elfen Lied and films like Grave of the Fireflies make any argument that anime is for kids, moot.

#7: Influences on Western Animation over the Years

Have you noticed more of your favorite animated series getting a kind of an Anime feel? You’re not imagining things. Several animated television series are taking cues and inspirations from Anime. The Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder has often cited Samurai Champloo as one of his key inspirations for bringing his popular comic strip to television. This trend continues to grow stronger with character designs, over exaggerated reactions and clear ties to Asian culture being seen in in other series like Teen Titans and Avatar: The Last Airbender. It’s not just visual styles either, as western animation becomes less of a medium for younger audiences, and more of a means to tell the kind of stories live action simply can’t.

#6: Well Fleshed Out Characters

Also in:

Top 20 Zero to Hero Anime Characters

Anime is amazing for giving us memorable characters, each having their own backstories, origins and stories that can evolve in any direction. The end result is a lot of unpredictable stories and some of the strongest and most iconic fiction characters of all time. This is true for villains as well, many of whom can, and have carried their own amazing series’. Evil geniuses like Bleach’s Aizen (eye-zen) and Death Note’s Light, are villains who have as much depth as any of their heroic counterparts. Falling or rising, heroes and villains alike will always stand out in Anime.

#5: Immersive Worlds with a Lot of Depth

Anime wouldn’t be so deserving of respect if it didn’t succeed at creating immersive worlds to get lost in. These aren’t just gorgeous painted backgrounds, they are living, breathing worlds filled with history and culture. From the roman fantasy inspired green lands of GATE to the digital real life simulated community of Sword Art Online, no expense is spared in Anime to make these settings feel as accessible as possible. It not only helps you get invested in watching the characters journeys, but also makes you wish you could visit and explore these new worlds yourself. Brave new worlds, lots of depth.

#4: Strong Female Characters

It’s unfortunate that most of the time, when people think women in anime, they think ‘fanservice’. Anime, has, well, fanservice, but it also has some of the strongest and most interesting female characters of all time. Women inhabit every role imaginable, from supercop to soldier, to vampire hunter and even Hollywood could learn a thing or two from these strong female leads. Anime doesn’t reserve roles for either gender, and for every strong typically male archetype, you’ll fine a series with a woman in that role.

#3: Long Episodic Sagas
