For this list, we’ll be taking a look at all the video game characters that remain an enigma to us even today. We’ll only be ranking one character per franchise.

#10: The Phantom “Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies” (2013)

This international spy works under the motto of “don’t ask, don’t tell.” Not much is known about this elusive criminal, other than the fact that he’s considered extremely dangerous and will stop at nothing to retain his anonymity. Able to disguise himself as virtually anyone, The Phantom is also highly adept at deception, so much so that it’s believed his true identity is unknown even to himself. What he does understand is the impending danger he’ll find himself in if his identity is uncovered, making it his greatest – and possibly his only – fear.

#9: The Stranger “The Walking Dead Season 1” (2012)

In the zombie apocalypse, befriending shady characters like this guy is a big no-no. Not much is known about this unhinged man; however he clearly harbors animosity toward Lee’s group, and a strange fixation on one of their youngest followers, Clementine. It’s later revealed that his dementia was inadvertently caused by the actions of Lee’s group. We’re not going to go into full details here, but just know that in a Zombie Apocalypse, everything has dire consequences.

#8: Q “Street Fighter III: Third Strike” (1999)

Also in:

Top 20 Most Powerful Video Game Characters

We’ve heard of keeping your opponent guessing, but this character seems to take this a bit too far. This Street Fighter combatant has seemingly morphed his way into the character selection menu without so much as a word. Q’s metal face and trench coat outfit only adds to his mystifying aura, as do his peculiar movement and fighting patterns. He’s also been inexplicably linked with a number of murders and unsolved mysteries, making his appearances that much more chilling.

#7: The Strange Man “Red Dead Redemption” (2010)

Also in:

10 Red Dead Redemption Theories That Might Actually Be True

You may not know much about him, but he sure as hell knows a lot about you. This aspect is perhaps the most mysterious thing about The Strange Man, and also the most unsettling. The gentleman’s refined sense of style does nothing to help define his identity, and neither does his cryptic style of speech, but the various tasks he sets for John have all appeared to test the ex-gangster’s morality code. Due to his elusive nature, it’s often speculated that The Strange Man is some kind of higher being; or is that just what he wants us to think?

#6: The Happy Mask Salesman “The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask” (2000)

Also in:

The 10 Most Mysterious Characters In Zelda Games

This peddler provides an assortment of strange and mystical masks; however the most peculiar one is the mask he wears everyday. Don’t be fooled by this salesman’s welcoming appearance, as his bipolar nature causes him to erratically lash out at any time. The masks he collects are definitely disturbing, but not knowing how he collects them may be even worse. Considering he’s the one that teaches Link “The Song of Healing,” a song that turns dead spirits or those dying into masks, the thought of how he comes into possession of most of his collection makes his appearance all the more worrisome.

#5: The Illusive Man “Mass Effect” series (2007-12)

Also in:

Top 10 Most Cosplayed Video Game Characters Of All Time

The most enigmatic character in this sci-fi series must have an equally enigmatic name. The Illusive Man is the leader of Cerberus, a human-survivalist organization. His history and true intentions are unknown, but it soon becomes evident that he’s in his position only to push his own agenda. This truth begins to blur the line between friend and foe, making the Illusive man… well, more illusive. It also doesn’t help that his eyes have been replaced with steely blue prosthetics, giving the Cerberus leader an almost inhuman look.

#4: The Merchant “Resident Evil 4” (2005)

Also in:

Top 10 Most Evil Video Game Characters of All Time

One can never be too prepared when embarking on a top-secret mission in a desolate European village. Appearing at random, The Merchant provides Leon Kennedy with his most essential equipment, weapons, and ammo; yet his off-putting demeanor doesn’t help him distinguish him much from the various infected residents of the rural area. His identity and supplier are both anonymous, but in cases such as these, it’s best to not even ask.

#3: The Lutece Twins “Bioshock Infinite” (2013)

Also in:

Top 10 Video Game Characters We Let Die

There are those that operate from the shadows, and then there are these two that operate from different dimensions. Robert and Rosalind decide to pose as twins after they discover they’re actually the same person from alternate dimensions. Their expertise in quantum physics has granted them the power to manipulate tears in the universe, leading them to devise a plan to alter their unfavorable future. With their dialogue almost as cryptic as their random appearances, the twins act as his escort through Columbia, while covertly dictating the player’s every move.

#2: Giygas “Earthbound” (1994)

Villains come in many forms in role-playing games, but to this day we’re still not sure what this one is. Said to be the embodiment of all evil, Giygas uses his malicious powers to sentence all living things to a doomed existence. The final confrontation with this being is the most unnerving, as his unrecognizable attacks and erratic speech patterns only aid in confusing the player more. In the end, Giygas’ only weakness proved to be a human emotion, which in the end makes you to wonder what you were truly fighting. Before we unveil our pick for top mysterious video game character, here are a few honorable mentions: - Pyro “Team Fortress 2” (2007) - HUNK “Resident Evil” series (1996-) - Thomas Zane “Alan Wake” (2010) - Lucien Lachance “The Elder Scrolls Oblivion” (2006) - Voldo “Soul Calibur” series (1996-2014)

#1: The G-Man “Half-Life” series (1998-2007)

Also in:

Top 10 Female Video Game Characters that Deserve Their Own Spin Off

The Half-Life series focuses a lot on the mysteries regarding alien dimensions, and right in the middle of the inter-dimensional conflict is this mysterious figure. The G-Man appears to lead researcher Gordon Freeman through every step of his travels between worlds, and at many times seems to possibly be following you. He drops hints that he answers to an unseen higher authority, yet his movements seem to imply that he works as an independent party. Either way, his identity, motive and abilities, are all about as enigmatic as Half Life 3’s release date. Do you agree with our list? Which video game character do you find most mysterious?
