Top 20 Unexpectedly Violent Moments in Cartoons

Not all cartoon characters are cute and cuddly. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’re counting down our picks for the top ten most violent cartoons. For this list, we’re looking at animated TV programs that pack in the most blood, gore, and anvils to the head. We’re excluding anime, because that just wouldn’t be fair. Before we begin, we should mention that, due to the nature of the list, there will be some graphic content.

#10: "Rick and Morty" (2013-)

Also in:

Top 10 Brutal Deaths on Rick and Morty

This Adult Swim sci-fi cartoon focuses on an awkward teenage boy and his mad scientist alcoholic grandfather, who often takes him on dangerous adventures. Heavily inspired by “Back to the Future,” much of the plot is motivated by Rick and his apathy towards the safety of others. Thus, many gruesome deaths occur, with the relatively innocent Morty even going on a killing spree at one point. Man, that kid must need a lot of therapy... Nobody is safe in the madcap universe of “Rick and Morty,” not even Mr. Poopybutthole!

#9: "Mr. Pickles" (2014-)

Also in:

Top 20 Most Violent Cartoons

Another Adult Swim series, the pilot of this black comedy follows a young boy’s demonic pet dog as he disembowels a teenager, scalps a stripper, murders a scout leader, and tears a boy’s face off. And that’s just the first episode! This is the newest show on our list and each episode is only ten minutes long. In that short amount of time, however, “Mr. Pickles” has shed more than enough blood to merit a spot here. This dog is definitely not man’s best friend – well, except for Tommy that is.

#8: "Robot Chicken" (2005-)

Also in:

Top 20 Robot Chicken Sketches of All Time

Adult Swim certainly offers all the cartoon violence one could possibly desire. This stop-motion sketch comedy isn’t afraid to lampoon anything. Created by Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, each episode consists of several shorts, regularly featuring celebrity guests... and, more often than not, puts them in a violent situation. These little clay figures are shot, stabbed, blown up, or otherwise mutilated in just about every episode. How do they even have that much red clay? If there’s a lesson to be learned from all this carnage, it’s to never screw with Bitch Pudding.

#7: "Tom and Jerry" franchise (1940-)

Also in:

Top 10 Unexpectedly Violent Moments in Cartoons

The misadventures of these scoundrels almost always involve Tom Cat trying (and usually failing) to hunt down Jerry Mouse. Often, the feline will set up a complicated trap that backfires on him…or at least ends up with him getting hit with a hammer. Few cartoon all-stars do slapstick violence better than Tom and Jerry, which is one of the reasons why they’ve been honored with several Academy Awards. They’re truly a timeless duo, entertaining generation after generation with their ongoing feud.

#6: "The Ren & Stimpy Show" (1991-95)

Also in:

Top 10 Darkest Cartoons from the 90s

One of the “original three” Nicktoons, “Ren and Stimpy,” about a short-tempered dog and a dim-witted cat, drew significant controversy in the ‘90s for its risqué, violent content. In fact, an episode was banned from airing on Nickelodeon because of a scene featuring Ren beating a man nearly to death. Many other scenes were removed from episodes, including a scene with a severed head and a face being grated. So creator John Kricfalusi went all-out years later with the “Ren & Stimpy ‘Adult Party Cartoon’”. Of course, if that revamped series proved anything, it’s that “Ren & Stimpy” probably needed a censor.

#5: "Axe Cop" (2013-)

Also in:

Top 10 Violent Characters in Cartoons

Based on the web comic of the same name, this animated series sees Nick Offerman voicing the lead as Axe Cop, a police officer who, you guessed it, wields an axe. This premise would go to waste if Axe Cop didn’t use his axe to waste what he refers to as “bad guys,” but fortunately, he does so with pleasure and without discretion. Co-created by a five year-old, it’s not surprising that the law of logic don’t apply to this badass hero, and that results in hilarious carnage. What else would you expect from a show called “Axe Cop?”

#4: "Æon Flux" (1991-95)

Also in:

Top 10 Most Violent Moments in the DC Animated Universe

This sci-fi MTV series followed Æon Flux, a secret agent from the fictional country of Monica as she carried out various missions. This show is strange in that little is revealed about Æon or her lover/enemy Trevor, and she dies at the end of almost every short episode, usually in violent fashion. Though, she is always able to kick a lot of ass before she meets her eventual fate. Oh, and as for that live-action film adaptation? Let’s just put it this way: nobody wants to see a PG-13 version of “Æon Flux!”

#3: "Metalocalypse" (2006-13)

Our fourth and most violent entry from Adult Swim on this list, “Metalocalypse” follows death metal band Dethklok. Their popularity is so grand that they’ve attracted the attention of The Tribunal, a mysterious group that monitors their every move. Featuring plenty of satanic imagery, Dethklok’s fans will do anything and go through anything for their favorite band, even if it means death. With characters like Nathan Explosion, William Murderface, and yet another Pickles, there’s plenty of blood and gore to go around. Talk about putting the “death” in death metal.

#2: "South Park" (1997-)

Also in:

Top 10 Most GRUESOME South Park Episodes

When a show’s most quotable line has to do a child’s death, it must be a pretty darn violent. Besides Kenny getting killed countless times, there are gruesome happenings all around the town of South Park. Whether Chef is getting mauled to a bloody pulp, Butters is getting ninja star in the eye, or terrorists are bombing our imagination, it’s hard to think of one episode where something horrifically violent doesn’t occur. Of course in today’s topsy-turvy world, nobody cares about violence as long as nobody has a wardrobe malfunction. Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions: "Looney Tunes" franchise (1930-) "The Simpsons" (1989-) "Archer" (2010-) "The Venture Bros." (2004-)

#1: "Happy Tree Friends" (1999-)

Also in:

Top 20 Sitcom Moments That Made Us Happy Cry

If you’re wondering why these cute woodland creatures get our top spot, you obviously haven’t seen the show. This cartoon was born on the internet and follows a group of furry friends who live in a forest, and often find themselves in situations that are...well, take a look for yourself. Mondo Media CEO John Evershed said, “I envision kids watching ‘Happy Tree Friends’ 20 or 30 years from now the same way they watch Tom and Jerry now.” Let’s hope that’s not because this series is clearly for the adult crowd…! Do you agree with our list? What do you think is the most violent cartoon? For more scandalous top tens published every day, be sure to subscribe to WatchMojo.com.
