School can be a bit cruel to you if you're labelled a genius, even more so if you're five years younger than everybody else. Luckily, child prodigy Chiyo Mihama meets a few incredible friends who help her weather the shaky seas of high school life. Though they couldn't be more different, Chiyo, along with the competitive Tomo, mature Koyomi, daydreaming Ayumu, impulsive Kagura and the seemingly aloof Sakaki somehow all make it work. Through the good times and bad, the awkward and exciting, they've always got each other.
#9: Haruhi, Yuki and Mikuru “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya” (2006)
While the plot may revolve around the male protagonist, Kyon, it's these three spectacular girls who steal the spotlight in a big way. Eccentric doesn't even begin to describe Haruhi and the rest of the SOS Brigade, which includes the time travelling Mikuru Asahina, and the alien-designed artificial intelligence Yuki Nagato. The titular character is herself able to alter the very fabric of the universe, so to say that this ragtag group of girls gets into a few interesting situations while trying to keep Haruhi in check is putting it lightly. In the end, the bond that these three form is truly out of this world.

Tasked with tracking down and slaying the demonic Yoma, these 47 warriors are half-human, half-Yoma hybrids. They must complete their task without expending too much energy and becoming fully awakened Yoma themselves, which leads to an incredibly intimate and difficult interplay between the girls. Forced to wade through awful and traumatic events for the fate of the world, the Claymores all navigate complicated situations of hate, love, and everything in-between. Be they good or evil, the claymores are one of the toughest teams of ladies you'll find in any anime.

A surprisingly realistic look into the hectic struggle of making it to stardom as the top pop idols in Japan, Idolmaster centers around 13 unique and talented girls who learn they have to rely on each other and work together to be the best they can be. Faced with incredible pressure in a harsh industry, the multifaceted girls have to overcome everything from a fear of dogs, to family conflicts, to just plain growing up too fast. Thankfully, they manage it all with a bit of luck, a wonderful web of friendship, and some absolutely killer tunes and dance moves.
#6: Konata, Kagami, Tsukasa, & Miyuki “Lucky Star” (2007)
They do say opposites attract. The series focuses on the anime-obsessed Konata Izumi in her daily life as a teenager, which can at times be daunting and downright weird. However, with her best friends, the brilliant and polite Miyuki Takara, and fiery fraternal twin sisters Tsukasa and Kagami Hiiragi at her side, there's no awkward situation or peculiar question they can't tackle. From concerns about physical appearance, to falling behind in school, the four girls tackle issues armed with friendship and a lot of twisted humour.
#5: Amamizukan Girls “Princess Jellyfish” (2010)
Being a little different can be hard, especially if different means being obsessed with jellyfish, or trains, or an obscure ancient Chinese text. The girls of the Amamizukan apartment complex may be a strange brood, but they are incredibly intelligent, loyal and protective of one another. Referring to themselves as “Amars,” the girls eventually have to band together to save their beloved apartment complex, which is really their only refuge from the outside world. In the process, the girls grow more confident and willing to come out of their shells, accepting that being different might not be such a bad thing after all.

Some people think that there's nothing you can't accomplish with a great friendship, and the Muse Girls are definitely a testament to that. There's nothing more inspiring than a plucky group of girls who band together to save their school from closing by doing something wild like becoming a stellar pop group, armed with an arsenal of catchy hooks. The Muse Girls powerful chemistry - both personal and musical - takes them on some ridiculous adventures, but also helps the girls to discover who they really are in the process. Whether in a duet, or in a tough situation, it's nice to know that someone's got your back.

The relationship of these five girls spans not only a wealth of emotions, but timelines as well, providing many different glimpses into the many complicated facets of their friendship. Throughout the series, the girls' interactions turn from curt, antagonistic, and downright deadly, to warm, loving and caring, with the twisted reality of their shared fates as magical girls bringing them closer and closer together. It's that cycle of hope and despair that the magical girls are cursed to live that's responsible for one of the most unique and intense relationships in anime.

Music has the tendency to bring people together and build unforgettable, lasting bonds, especially if those people happen to be four charming and eccentric girls who otherwise probably wouldn't have met. Mugi and Yui are pulled into the school's light music club solely to keep it from disbanding by childhood friends Mio and Ritsu, they're later joined by Azusa and in no time at all the fivesome are as thick as thieves, not to mention a musical marvel. While they may butt heads from time to time, and be fairly different from one another, the love and support of the light music club, and the way the girls help each other grow and push themselves to be better is nothing short of inspiring. No honourable mentions this time around!
