For this list, we’ll be looking at the adorable animals that became famous on social media via Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube. While we have done a celebrity pets list, we will be including some here if they have a huge following and strong social media presence on their own.

#10: Maru Taro

This Japanese dog has been dubbed “the most famous dog on Instagram.” Maru Taro’s owner Shinjiro Ono began posting pictures of him online after the 2011 earthquake in Japan. Ono wanted to bring some joy back into people’s lives after the disaster, and he thought his Shiba Inu could do just that. His Instagram account shows a variety of photos of Maru Taro sleeping in odd positions or posing with weird objects, dressed in costumes with his owners, meeting animal friends and enjoying everyday life. Fast forward to 2016, and Maru now boasts 2.5 million followers on Instagram.

#9: Sockington

Sockington’s tale is a rags to riches story, since his owner Jason Scott rescued him as a stray outside a subway station back in 2004. In 2007, Scott created a Twitter account for his beloved cat, posting Sockington’s apparent thoughts and concerns. As of 2016, he has over 1.3 million followers on Twitter, many of whom are also animals. Sockington later created a Facebook page, where he gathered over 350,000 followers. Not only did he become a hit on social media, but also caught the attention of magazines and news broadcasting stations such as MSNBC News and Parade Magazine. If that wasn’t enough, Sockington even had his own clothing line for a short time– which was basically a collection of t-shirts with his face on it.

#8: Venus

She’s the Two-Face of the feline world! Venus the cat gained social media recognition due to her distinct appearance, where half her face is black, and the other is orange; with a clear line down the center of her face separating the two colors. Because of her unique appearance, she gained popularity as the “Chimera Cat” on YouTube, with her audience now mostly on Facebook and Instagram, with over 1 million followers on each. Her social media accounts mostly depict her going about everyday life with her cat friends Mojo and Ginger.

#7: Pumpkin

She’s the raccoon that thinks she’s a dog. Pumpkin was rescued as a cub when she fell out of a tree with a broken leg, and her mother never returned to get her. Her current owners took her in and they nursed her back to health– which is allowed, since Pumpkin and her owners live in the Bahamas and raccoons can be domesticated there. Unable to return to the wild, she adapted quickly to living with her new canine siblings. She became famous when her family began posting photos of her antics with the dogs and her general mischievous behavior around the house on Instagram. Pumpkin acquired a following of over 870,000 people on Instagram, has a Facebook page with over 70,000 followers.
