Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the nearly universal experiences in “Mario Kart” games. Is there an intrinsic “Mario Kart” experience we forgot? Shell us in the comments with your favorites… or your horror stories.

#10: Offroad Difficulties

“Mario Kart” tracks are incredibly varied but most of them tend to have a major drawback, which is - if you leave the main road, you’re gonna have a bad time! Sometimes it means falling over the side into water or a bottomless pit or space. Other times you’ll encounter rough terrain that will slow your speed to a crawl. While certain items can make getting back up to speed easier, in general, going off the beaten track means you’ll quickly fall behind your competition. While the wait to get back can feel long, it’s still not as bad as getting stuck in a glitch.

#9: Getting Red Shelled AFTER Passing Someone

Red Shells are a hazard of playing “Mario Kart,” we all get hit by them sometimes. But then there’s THIS infuriating circumstance! These homing items ostensibly lock onto the racer directly in front of the person using them. And yet, all too often, we’ll hear a Red Shell coming, race ahead of someone, and still get hit by the things! Sure, sure - the coding on these games can’t perfectly target only the next person in front of the attacker. That doesn’t stop us from feeling just a little bit salty about it!

#8: Spamming Dash Mushrooms

Dash Mushrooms are one of the most common items in “Mario Kart” games. By using them, players are granted a momentary boost in speed. Although conventional wisdom holds that you should save them until you really need them, particularly if you get the triple version or the Golden version. But… it’s just so much fun to use them one after another! Besides making your character stutter in some versions, spamming a dash mushroom can be advantageous, such as when you want to get some extra speed over rough terrain or to pass someone on a straightaway.

#7: Going the Wrong Way

“Mario Kart” tracks can be complex and sometimes confusing. Who among us hasn’t gotten turned around at some point? Whether it’s because we were turned around after getting hit by an item, or we just made a wrong turn at Albuquerque, it’s easy to go the wrong way in “Mario Kart.” And every time, Lakitu is sure to let us know we’re messing up in the most annoying way possible! Yes, we know this isn’t right, getting lapped by everyone else clued us in, you don’t need to keep hovering in front of us!

#6: Missing Shortcuts

10 Famous Missing Body Parts

There are shortcuts littered throughout “Mario Kart” tracks. Some of them are built into the tracks intentionally, while others can be achieved through cheesing dash mushrooms or “creative” driving. But, as satisfying as it is to nail a shortcut perfectly, it invokes pure despair whenever you mess one up or realize that there’s one you’d never even thought of. Your gamble to leap ahead has failed, and chances are, you’ve already fallen behind the pack. But then, “Mario Kart” is as much a game of chance as it is one of skill sometimes.

#5: Irrational Hatred For THAT Character

It doesn’t matter which “Mario Kart” game you’re playing, you’ll still find them - THAT character! You know the one! They seem to have it out for you in particular - always hitting you with shells, knocking you off course, or just stealing your lead when they have no right! Their faces may vary, but somehow they still manage to annoy you or sabotage you at the worst possible time! Rationally, of course, you know it’s just an A.I. or a player controlling them! But in your heart… you’ll never forgive Waluigi- we mean, THAT character!

#4: Getting Hit Right Before the Finish Line

We’ve all been there - the finish line is in sight! The other racers are nipping at your heels, but you’ve got a commanding lead! You have this in the bag! But then - out of nowhere, you’re hit with a Blue, Red, or Green Shell! Maybe even a lightning bolt! And what seemed like a certain victory rapidly turns into you fighting to get fourth place! While it rarely feels great to get hit with an item, it feels especially terrible when it means having victory snatched from you at the last possible moment!

#3: Sabotaging Yourself

Failure in “Mario Kart” is an inevitability. Still, while it’s expected that your opponents will try to hit you with an item or run you off the road, it’s tragically common for everyone to do the same to themselves! Maybe you launch a shell that rebounds off a wall back at you. Or perhaps you drop a banana you later slip on yourself. Or maybe you just drive right off the track because you lost focus for a second. Self-sabotage is just as frustrating as falling victim to someone else, if not more so, in some cases. At least when someone hits you with a shell, there’s the satisfaction of getting them back…

#2: Being in Last Place

Every race has a winner and a loser (several losers actually). And it’s basically a guarantee that at some point playing “Mario Kart,” you’ll either fall to last place temporarily or lose the race entirely. With how complex and chaotic some races can get, it’s easy for places to change frequently and rapidly in a race. It can feel very disheartening to get a run of bad luck and see everyone zoom by you as you get stuck in place or fall off the track. Still, at least you get the best items when you’re in last place - unless you don’t!

#1: Getting Blue Shelled

Of all the “Mario Kart” items, a few stand as the most feared. While getting struck by lightning is also pretty bad, at least that hits everyone equally. It’s not like they invented an item specifically to punish someone for performing well at the game-... oh-wait-they-did! The spiky Blue Shell is designed to hit the person in first place. We’ve all been riding high, confident that we’re going to win, only to get hit by this instrument of the devil sent by someone a whole lap behind us! WHO GAVE THEM THE RIGHT?!
