Deep, burning obsession is not necessarily the trait you think of when you hear Robin Williams’ name. Enraptured with the life of the Yorkin family, Williams’ character in this psychological thriller uses the developed photographs from his lab to align a chronological window into the family’s more personal moments. Illuminated by dingy lighting, the image of a sociopathic Robin Williams reading people’s life stories through their photos is too powerful to pass up for this list.

He was NFL’s most valuable player of 1984, yet Dan Marino’s greatest legacy is the effect he had on a ‘90s comedy character – at least that’s what concerns us most right now. Most of the entries on this list link in to a character’s deepest desire, but in this detective comedy, this is nothing but pure hatred. Ray Finkle’s abhorrence for his former teammate is effectively shown in an artistic display of pain. Taking the template of a teenager’s bedroom and projecting a dark twist on its appeal adds new depth to his compulsive way of thinking.

Starting with ‘gluttony’, the chalkboard itself is simple in concept, merely listing off the Biblical seven sins as good old Morgan and Brad go through the film. But that’s what makes the listing of the seven sins so special; it’s a literal and foreboding countdown of the story’s most devastating events. In short, it’s a fantastic yet telling tip off for the main characters as everything tragically unfolds.

They say you should give yourself a project to focus on after a big breakup, so we can only imagine that the set designer went through an ordeal as huge as a divorce to build this entry. His perfect relationship concluded, Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Tom switches gears to concentrate on his architecture career during the final days of summer. Redrafting the skyscrapers of the city, JGL’s wall brings out the best character growth in the film and proves a more heartfelt obsession wall than the film’s poster. Honestly, that one’s a little creepy.

With a color-coded strategy that organises events by their dates, there’s no denying the effort and dedication of this woman’s endeavor and this is the physical and visual proof.

Everything starts with a simple idea laid out in pen – even a machine designed to take down Nazis. This film is focused almost completely on obsession walls, with several members of the team designing their own methods to crack the Enigma code. The set of Bletchley Park is littered with notes and illustrations on how to create the world’s first computer, which Alan Turing dubs Christopher in this historical thriller. It’s not every character’s obsession to beat Nazi Germany, but it’s a pretty good one to have.

One of the more lucrative walls on this list makes its dominating way over Congress. As Chief Whip of the Democratic Party, Frank Underwood is tasked with challenging congressmen to vote the way he wants them to, and he has a lovely whiteboard to remind him where everyone stands. Over the course of the TV series, this board has been used to pass and defeat the bills necessary to advance Frank’s political career. Listing everybody in the House, the whip board is essential to Frank’s obsessive plans.

Some cops like to take their work home with them; Matthew McConaughey likes to take his to his own private locker. Only appearing in the later stages of season one, Rust’s storage unit is a crucial element to the final moments, especially as we see him reorganizing it into a makeshift office environment and coating the walls in evidence of the Dora Lange murder in 1995. Literal walls of obsession crafted over twenty years? Now that’s dedication.

While he and Mac are at their new job, Charlie Kelly stumbles on what he thinks is a massive corporate conspiracy, which is that none of its employees actually exist. Spending hours trying to decipher the mystery of the mail, Charlie is so stressed that not even another cup of coffee can help. But this obsession wall proves futile as the mail is not for Pepe Silvia, but most likely for the employees in Pennsylvania. Poor Charlie. And in the process, he gives the perfect example of an obsession wall. Unlike previous entries on this list, this wall-covering map reflects the character of John Nash and is a literal display of his own inner thinking.
