If all animation was perfect, we wouldn’t have hot dogs. Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top 10 Animation Mistakes in Steven Universe. For this list, we’ll be looking at some of the little animation glitches and errors in one of our favorite Cartoon Network titles -including the original series, TV movie, and spin-off epilogue. Some of these are easy to miss and forgivable, but others are just hilariously embarrassing to look back at. Word of warning, most of these errors happen in the middle of pretty big moments in the show, so expect spoilers ahead.

#10: Garnet’s Missing Forearm “Familiar”

After reuniting with his friends on Homeworld, Steven thinks he may finally have the solution on how to bring the Diamonds together. So it seems like everything will be ok, right? Well, except for one minor issue – while Garnet is listening to Steven’s plan, one of her forearms is missing. This goof might be easier to dismiss because our favorite fusion has her arms crossed; but, taking into account the color of her sleeves, it’s easier to see that the forearm is completely gone. To be fair, though, she seems too busy listening to Steven’s plan to notice her misplaced limb.

#9: The Cabinets “Snow Day”

To get Steven to participate in Steven Tag, Garnet tricks him into checking one of the cabinets -where Amethyst awaits to spring a surprise tag attack. However, pay close attention to the cabinets during the intercut between Steven and Garnet. In one frame, the cabinets have regular knobs; but in another frame, they have curved handles instead. We already know the Gems have shapeshifting powers, but apparently the Beach House has inherited the same abilities since the handles don’t even come close to matching. Steven may be too busy frantically trying to survive the game to notice, but we can’t unsee this weird continuity error.

#8: Spinel’s POV “Steven Universe: The Movie” (2019)

It’s horrible to think about how Spinel has been waiting for Pink Diamond’s return for thousands of years, only to finally move after seeing Steven’s message to the universe. However, there’s something off about the perspective of when she first learns the truth. When we get the first glimpse of her in the opening, she is seen FACING the broadcast. Yet, during Spinel’s POV flashback, we see that she was facing AWAY from the communicator during the message and actually had to turn and run towards it. The continuity error is a little jarring from a critical point of view, but the tense emotion of the scene more than makes up for it.

#7: The Disappearing Box “Cheeseburger Backpack”

Also in:

Top 10 BEST Steven Universe Moments

Steven is excited to show off his new Cheeseburger Backpack –fresh out of the box- to the Gems and possibly take it out on a mission. However, if you pay close attention between the two wide shots of Steven introducing the backpack and then prepping for the mission, you’ll notice that something goes missing. The box that the blessed backpack came in just vanishes into thin air, never to be seen for the rest of the episode. We get that the box served its purpose and isn’t needed anymore, but it’s kind of unsettling to think of a prop just vanishing out of the blue after it’s done being useful –it’s also not good for continuity, either.

#6: Spinel’s Crooked Heart “Steven Universe: The Movie” (2019)

Poor Spinel; being abandoned by Pink Diamond really turned her life –and her heart-shaped gemstone- upside down. However, during her and Steven’s final battle when she yells at Steven to stop singing, you can see that her gem is right-side up again. Now, Spinel may defy the laws of physics with her cartoony antics, but we’re fairly certain that a gemstone is locked in place until the Gem changes her form or regenerates after taking too much damage. Either way, it seems weird that she’d briefly readjust her heart back into its original position just before she tries to punch Steven’s lights out.

#5: Dr. Steven’s Gloves “Volleyball”

A good medical professional should always have rubber gloves handy –especially when administering magical healing spit. When Dr. Steven goes to Pearl for advice on how to heal Pink Pearl’s crack, he can still be seen wearing a pair of gloves. However, there’s a brief moment where his gloves disappear –only to reappear in the following shot for the rest of the scene. Seems like Steven couldn’t decide between taking them off or leaving them on, so the artists decided for him, by forgetting to paint them on for a moment. It’s not like they helped with healing Pink Pearl’s scars, but it’s a lot more hygienic with the gloves than without them.

#4: Return of OG Amethyst “Sworn to the Sword”

Top 5 Facts About the Will & Grace Return

Whenever a gem regenerates after being poofed, they regenerate with an entirely new outfit. By this episode, Amethyst’s duds consisted of a black tank top and mauve leggings. However, in “Sworn to the Sword”, for one single shot, Amethyst is donning her original outfit – mauve top, black leggings, and a single bra strap showing. On the one hand, it’s only been one episode since Amethyst’s regeneration, so it must’ve taken a bit for the change to set in. On the other hand, continuity is a fragile thing, so artists really have to be careful about backpedaling like this –even if it was for a short instance.

#3: Bismuth’s Missing Pants “Bismuth”

When it comes to animation goofs, this next one means serious ‘Bismuth!’ After giving them their upgraded weapons, Bismuth and the Crystal Gems engage in a little sparring session. However, in one shot after Bismuth blocks an attack… her pants disappear. We know Gems can magically change their clothes at the drop of a hat, but to lose your pants in the middle of a brawl is a little impractical. What’s even funnier is that Bismuth’s pants actually vanish earlier in the episode as well, but here it’s a LOT more obvious. To be fair, it’s not uncommon to slip up when coloring for a fast-paced brawl, but it’s still embarrassing to pause and look back at.

#2: Ruby’s Missing Gem “Hit the Diamond”

As any “Steven Universe” fan knows, a Gem’s gemstone is the main source of their physical body… but what happens when said gem goes missing? Our Ruby’s gem is embedded on her left palm, and yet, throughout the episode “Hit the Diamond”, her gem is either not drawn in, or disappears in between shots. In fact, in one instance, you actually see her gemstone for almost a second and then it randomly vanishes… in the same shot. We get that gemstones are hard to draw –sometimes it’s hard just to get the facets right, but without them, our favorite gems cannot physically exist. This is why artists should try to be a little more careful with this one detail. Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions. Jasper’s Visor “Jail Break” Steven’s Overlapping Shoulder “Sadie’s Song” Yellow Diamond’s Gem “Steven Universe: The Movie” (2019) The Crowd Switches Around “Steven Universe: The Movie” (2019) The Disappearing Fireplace “Bluebird”

#1: The Star Goes Missing “Fusion Cuisine”

A lot of these errors have been minor slip-ups, but taking the number one spot is the mistake we CANNOT overlook. The gems have just shown off their parental abilities, which makes Connie’s parents more comfortable with Steven hanging out with their daughter; so, happy ending, right? Well, except for one thing – the star on Steven’s shirt disappears. It isn’t obscured by anything like Steven’s arms, it’s just completely gone for one whole shot. What makes this so inexcusable is because the star is a trademark for the series – Steven’s shirts, the Crystal Gems’ insignia, even the series’ iris out all have stars in them. If there’s no star to represent, we’re not even sure what show this is.
