For this list, we’re looking at actors who’ve made their careers out of playing the characters we root for, which is why it’d be almost impossible for us to see them any other way. While it’s not completely unheard of, or even out of their range of capabilities, it’d certainly be difficult for us to see these actors playing anything other than the protagonist.
#10: Adam Sandler

As a perennial man-child, it’s hard for us to imagine Adam Sandler taking a turn towards the dark side. Even when he played the son of the Devil in 2000’s “Little Nicky,” he was still a good guy, all things considered. And it’s not like we haven’t seen him take on more serious roles. It’s just that those roles never include him tapping into the evil jerk that lies dormant inside most of us.

Despite her wide, toothy grin, it’s not such a far stretch to imagine this film darling in the role of a less- than-scrupulous character. And Julia Roberts did give it a go in 2012’s “Mirror Mirror,” but clearly her foray into bad girl territory was as forgettable as the film itself. While playing a still-likeable evil queen may not be that much of a reach, an evil hooker might be pushing it.

It’s kinda hard to imagine the funny guy as the evil guy. The brooding type with a dark sense of humor? Maybe. But an all-out “steal your kids and sell them on the black market” baddie? Not so much. Steve Carell has yet to completely shrug off the mantle of comedy and go full-on bad boy, and that might be for good reason. Who wants to frown at this guy when it’s so much more fun to crack up with him?

He’s an affable Brit with boyish charm, which he’s played to his advantage in almost every film he’s appeared in. Even his role as the rakish bad boy in “Bridget Jones’s Diary” was at least mildly endearing. True, Hugh Grant took a stab (literally) at a villainous role in 2012’s “Cloud Atlas.” But even his performance as a murderous cannibal was more comical than anything else.

She’s one of America’s sweethearts. Even with her on-set affair with Russell Crowe, it’s hard to imagine this star of “Sleepless in Seattle” doing anything worse than picking up her kids late from soccer practice. She did try to shed the squeaky clean image in 2003’s “In the Cut,” where the world got a glimpse of her… cookies. But even with the nudity and cookies, Meg Ryan still comes across as a Girl Scout.

He’d likely end up saving the day as the bad guy, anyway.

It probably doesn’t help that he’s an ordained minister in real life.

He definitely has the acting talent to pull off any role under the sun, but it’s hard to imagine him going from befriending a volleyball to masterminding a criminal syndicate.
