Welcome to MojoPlays, and today, we’re taking a look at 10 games you should play if you loved “Final Fantasy VII Remake” and its sequel, “Rebirth”!

“Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age” (2018)

At first, “Dragon Quest” may not seem like something FF7 fans would be too attracted to. It simply looks nothing like the world of Midgar, and it doesn’t play like FF7 Remake either. So, why the recommendation? For starters, “Dragon Quest” is Square’s baby from before it merged with Enix. Second, “Dragon Quest XI” specifically caters to those who simply love RPGs in general and crave a blend of the old-school with modern controls, graphics, and difficulty balance. This is a game that excels at world building in both visuals and level design. And the second you hear that wondrous music, you will quickly realize that “Dragon Quest” is worthy of as much love as its more sci-fi cousin gets.

“Honkai Star Rail” (2023)

Keeping in theme with RPGs in a general scope, the studio behind “Genshin Impact” has a game for players who dug FF7’s more science-fiction themes. “Honkai Star Rail” is a free-to-play RPG where you play as one of many Pathstriders you can earn through gacha mechanics. Whereas “Genshin” was an action RPG, “Honkai” is completely turn-based. Balance your use of basic attacks and Skills to bring down hordes of enemies as you explore space stations and space trains and the like. So, if you’re looking for a quality RPG that lets you do cool stuff but don’t have the cash to burn, “Honkai Star Rail” won’t squeeze dimes out of you and still show you a good time.

“Dragon’s Dogma” (2012)

One of the biggest highlights of FF7 are the larger-than-life boss fights. Honestly, the boss fights are massive! If you’re wanting an RPG that reaches that same level of scope and intensity, “Dragon’s Dogma” is perfect for you! In addition to recruiting Pawns to help you in your quests, you’ll be able to fight ferocious beasts that’ll put up as much of a fight as the Scorpion Sentinel or even the Airbuster. Once you learn enough spells and attacks, though, you will become a force to be reckoned with. And hey, you’ll have a second game to play as soon as you’re done with “Rebirth” since “Dragon’s Dogma II” launches right after!

“Yakuza: Like a Dragon” (2020)

Things to Know Before Playing Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Suppose you want the classic turn-based combat but still want that vibrant world that’s lived in and is hiding all sorts of side quests and secrets around every corner. We highly advise you try “Yakuza: Like a Dragon”. While your environment may be smaller than Midgar, don’t let the size fool you. You will stumble upon so many side missions throughout your campaign, some even lead to secret boss fights that will put your skills to the test. As for the narrative, “Like a Dragon” boasts a compelling narrative filled to the brim with characters that you will come to cherish long after your first playthrough ends.

“Xenoblade Chronicles” series (2010-)

Xenoblade Chronicles: Everything You Should Know

An interesting aspect to FF7 Remake and “Rebirth’s” combat is the light management elements, specifically the ability to switch between controlling party members while issuing commands at the others. If that layer of strategy scratches an itch for you, have you given any of the “Xenoblade Chronicles” games a try? Just like modern “Final Fantasy” games, “Xenoblade Chronicles” uses a real-time battle system. However, rather than mash attack, your character auto-attacks while you maneuver your character around your target and wait for the right moment to execute an Arts attack. In other words, positioning and teamwork are what make “Xenoblade” satisfying to play. The best part? You can jump into any of the main three games as they are all on Switch and can be played in any order. So, choose the game that interests you!

“Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom” (2017)

“Revenant Kingdom” is simply a game that everyone should play. Fans may not like the push away from the monster-collecting that the first game featured, but “Revenant Kingdom” is great for those wanting FF7’s combat without worrying about the other party members. Combat tasks you to focus on three different weapons as you slay your enemies. Once a weapon’s bar is filled, you can unleash a powerful spell. Your party acts on their own and can dish out some solid damage on their own. And just like FF7, “Revenant Kingdom” tells a beautiful story while throwing you into a gorgeous and vast world filled with all kinds of monsters to fight and colorful characters to befriend.

“Kingdom Hearts” series (2002-)

The Best Kingdom Hearts Cameos!

This is such an easy recommendation as “FF7 Remake” has so many similarities between “Kingdom Hearts”. Both utilize a real-time battle system that focuses on menu navigation while keeping yourself in a good position on the field. Thing about “Kingdom Hearts” is that it is much more focused on Skills. Skills can drastically alter the way you play and even unlock new attacks for you to spend Magic on. Sure, the narrative and lore can get overzealous in its talk of “letting the light into your heart to keep the darkness out”, but when looking at the gameplay, combat, and imaginative worlds, it’s almost impossible to turn down “Kingdom Hearts” if you loved FF7.

“Xenogears” (1998)

So, here’s the funny thing about “Xenogears”: this was the original “Final Fantasy VII”. Yeah, “Xenogears” has the story that was originally going to be used for FF7. What happened? Well, Square wasn’t super convinced of letting such a dark story be implemented into the IP. Tetsuya Takahashi and Kaori Tanaka got the greenlight, but it had to be under a completely different title irrelevant to “Final Fantasy”. For those of you who would like to see the story we didn’t get for FF7 and its remakes, we highly encourage you to go play it. The story, characters, and writing are just as brilliant here!

“The Legend of Heroes” series (1989-)

10 Final Fantasy Games That Deserve A Remake

“The Legend of Heroes” might come off as a bit weeb-ish for some. Don’t let that scare you off, though. Like “FF7 Remake”, “Legend of Heroes” does a lot of things to awaken your sense of adventure. From the unique characters and their stories to the imaginative world and enemy variety, these games pull you in such a way that it gets hard to turn the system off. But where should you start? That’s honestly up to you. Similar to “Xenoblade” and yes, “Final Fantasy”, every series in the franchise sort of acts as its own thing. Some references to previous games may pop up from time to time, but you can jump into the first games of “Trails of Cold Steel”, “Trails of Azure”, “Trails From Zero”, “Trails in the Sky”, or the recent “Trails Into Reverie” and have a grand time without knowing much about the other series.

“Persona 5 Royal” (2020)

10 Hidden Secrets In Persona Games

This might seem like a super obvious pick, but if you’ve already played FF7 and haven’t played it already, you owe it to yourself to play “Persona 5 Royal”. Atlus’s acclaimed JRPG matches the level of quality FF7 brings in narrative, writing, combat, level design, music - basically, everything. On top of that, “Royal” expands upon the base game with improved difficulty balance and introduces new characters to fill in plot holes and iron out more details. Just know that finishing the game, regardless of completion rating, is going to take substantially longer than FF7. Which games do you think FF7 Remake fans would enjoy? Did they make our list?
