VOICE OVER: Tyler Allen Queer characters have been historically underrepresented in horror movies, and when they did show up, they were often regarded as disposable, depraved, or deadly. Yet, filmmaking tropes have evolved from the queer-coded villains of classic Hollywood, to more thoughtful portrayals of the LGBTQIA experience. It took nearly a century for queer representation in horror to move from a place where even being gay on screen was disallowed, to a cinematic world where queer characters can be the heroes. Rather than being killed off in the first act of a horror movie, queer characters now have their perspectives centered. So how did we get here?
