Top 5 Surprising Facts about Supernatural

It’s time to bone up on television’s favorite paranormal hunters! Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top 5 Surprising Facts about Supernatural.

For this list, we’ll be looking at some lesser-known facts related to the long-running CW series Supernatural.

#5: The Show Lasted Longer Than Expected

When “Supernatural” creator Eric Kripke first conceived the show, he only planned for a three-season run. However, it quickly became apparent that “Supernatural” was a hit and Kripke soon found himself devising a plan for an additional two seasons. Even the cast and crew were surprised, joking at the 100th episode party that they couldn’t believe the show was still on the air! With over 260 episodes in 2017, “Supernatural” is still going strong - and in 2015 it became the longest-running North American live action fantasy series of all time! So much for a three season run!

#4: Jensen Ackles’ Father Made a Cameo

Being the star of a hit TV show comes with plenty perks. For Jensen Ackles, that meant scoring a cameo for his old man. Alan Ackles, who also happens to be an actor, having appeared in over 20 film and television projects, was lucky enough to have a brief role in his son’s series. The elder Ackles appeared in the Season 8 episode, “Heartache,” and played the role of Detective Pike. While it was only a small part, it must have meant the world to both men, as the opportunity to act alongside a family member doesn’t come along very often.

#3: Castiel's Name Came from a Google Search

Ever since he brought Dean back from Hell, the character of Castiel has been a fan favorite. And yet, his name came from a spur of the moment Google search. The show was set to air on a Thursday and creator Eric Kripke had yet to name his newest character, who also happened to be an angel. Thinking quickly, he Googled “Angel of Thursday” and got the name Castiel. Oddly enough, Misha Collins, the actor who plays Castiel, thought he was playing a demon. It wasn’t until the first day of shooting that Kripke told him he was an angel!

#2: The Winchester Name Has a Scary History

It’s only right that television’s foremost ghost hunters have a name to match! Sam and Dean’s last name is a nod to the Winchester Mystery House located in San Jose, California. The sprawling mansion was once home to Sarah Winchester, the widow of William Wirt Winchester, who was the treasurer of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company until his death. Sarah built the home after he died, but it quickly developed a reputation for being haunted, with many claiming it was by the ghosts of all the people her husband’s rifles had killed. Whether or not that’s true is up for debate, but either way it gives Sam and Dean’s name a killer backstory!

#1: Jensen Ackles Was Supposed to Be Sam

It’s hard to imagine Jensen Ackles playing anyone other than the Chevy-driving, gun-toting Dean Winchester. For over 250 episodes, he’s brought a level of wit, charisma, and energy to the role few actors would be able to match. However, David Nutter, who directed the pilot episode and who had worked with Ackles in the past, felt that he would make the perfect Sam. Later, Jared Padalecki came in for his audition and Nutter and Eric Kripke felt he would make the perfect Sam. Eventually, the two men realized they had two excellent choices in front of them and decided to hire them both, with the role of Dean ultimately going to Jensen!
