Top 10 Serious Moments in Sex and the City

For this list, the drinks have run out, the shoes are too expensive, and the city has left us hanging out to dry. So grab a warm blanket, curl up in a comfy chair, and have that box of Kleenex ready - preferably, with a good friend or three by your side – to relive some serious TV moments in the lives of these ladies.

#10: Smith Waits for Samantha

Samantha never expected to find a man like Jerry “Smith” Jerrod. But what started as casual sex grew into one of the best relationships in the series. Was it him shaving his head in support during her chemotherapy? His touching flower delivery? We’d have to say it started with his calm reaction to Richard Wright. Despite being told to “play with his own friends,” Smith waited for Samantha to return from her misguided romp, showing that he was capable of moving at whatever pace she needed him to. And when she broke down and cried, we knew just as well as he did that they were meant to be.

#9: “I’m There”

Sometimes, our friends willingly walk into messy situations, and sometimes, we have to let them. Season 3 Carrie and Big were as messy as a pile of week old laundry, so we understand Miranda’s misgivings about the two meeting after the dust settled on their affair. Miranda’s harsh words led the women to have a huge fight, something that hurt more than any man ever could. But unlike the uncertain waters of dating, all it took was one phone call for them to fall back into their comfortable friendship. Miranda promised to be there for Carrie, and even offered some important advice: don’t kiss him.

#8: “You’re My People”

One of the most devastating moments in the entire series was Samantha’s breast cancer, even if it led to a powerful speech. In an attempt to not ruin her special day, Samantha insists that they not tell Miranda about her diagnosis. Like any good friend, Miranda suspects that her girls aren’t telling her something. Charlotte tells Miranda that they can discuss it after the reception and to return to “her people,” but Miranda responds with the most important message she can give her friends in her newly married status. And just like that, the four friends sit and talk the way they always do.

#7: Harry and Charlotte Get Engaged

Harry Goldenblatt was not the guy Charlotte expected to fall in love with. Bald. Crass. Hairy – literally. This was not the man for a pristine woman like Charlotte York. But Harry’s all-around sweetness was enough to make her melt... until a heartbreaking argument between the two led him to leave. Not only was Charlotte desperate to see him again, but so were we. We’d fallen in love with the Jewish divorce lawyer just as much as Charlotte had. No other man could ever replace him, so we were thrilled to see the two rekindle their love with Charlotte’s tearful declaration of love and Harry’s proposal.

#6: Miranda Says, “I Love You”

What happens when a one-night stand turns into a relationship, a break-up, another relationship, another break-up, and a baby? If you’re Miranda Hobbes, you don’t realize your true feelings until the final season of the series, even if everyone around you knew that you were in love. Unfortunately, Steve moved on, and eventually, Miranda did too... or so she thought. At baby Brady’s first birthday, having to face Steve and a #1 candle, Miranda finally managed to spit out the words she thought she couldn’t say. In response, Steve happily reciprocated her feelings, but what really seals the moment is the knowing look on Magda’s face.

#5: “I Can’t Believe I’m Here Again”

Oh Aidan, look at you with that gentle smile and down-home attitude! But nothing could stop the chemistry between Big and Carrie, even when it whittled down to peanut butter crackers, seedy hotels, broken teeth, and breaking their loved one’s hearts. Surprisingly, Aidan and Carrie got back together, but the spark wasn’t the same. That became abundantly clear with Aidan’s proposal. While Carrie did say yes, we all knew she wasn’t ready, and Aidan felt that he’d waited long enough. As they spent one last night together we realized, just like Carrie, that even the most perfect guy could be the wrong man for you.

#4: Miranda’s Mother Dies

One of the few moments that tackles a tragedy among the four friends, this storyline perfectly portrays all of the emotions that happen during a time of loss. There’s the phone call that comes out of nowhere. The feeling of helplessness when you don’t know what to say. The step-by-step procedure of giving your condolences. The inability to go through your daily routine no matter how hard you try. The moment when you realize that your loved one is, indeed, gone. Feeling alone even in a roomful of people. And, most importantly, the moment when the ones who love you most are right by your side.

#3: “Your Girl Is Lovely, Hubbell”

We didn’t think Big would be gone for good when he went to Paris, but we didn’t expect him to return with a fiancée either, especially since he once said he’d never get married again. It leads the women to compare Carrie and Big to Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford in, “The Way We Were,” right down to Carrie’s curly hair and Natasha’s straight brown locks. Carrie realizes that Big will always be a man who takes the easy way out instead of taking a chance on a woman like her, so she faces him with a smile and tries to let him go.

#2: Right Behind Her

No matter how much you may love your friends, it can be difficult to deal with one of them getting something that you’ve been wanting. This is especially true if it’s something as personal as having a baby, and especially if said friend has shown no interest in having children. To make matters worse, Charlotte later learns that she only has a 15% chance of getting pregnant. Despite the fact that Charlotte tells Miranda that she’s fine, Miranda quietly walks behind her, even if the women are at odds with one another over Miranda’s pregnancy. And Charlotte never looks back – she didn’t need to, because she knew that Miranda was right behind her.

Before we join the ladies in our number one pick, let’s check out these honorable mentions:
- Single and Fabulous…?

- Miranda Runs Out in the Rain

- “I Love You, But I Love Me More”

- “Do You Think About Her Feelings?”

- “Look at Me”

#1: Soul Mates

The most significant relationship in the entire series is the friendship between the four leading ladies, and no moment solidifies it better than Charlotte’s statement about soul mates. As Carrie celebrates her 35th birthday, everything that could go wrong does go wrong. Her big day is about to end on a sour note when Charlotte comes up with a touching idea: what if the ladies were each others’ soul mates? Men would be wonderful additions to their lives, but at the end of the day, the connection that mattered most would be their friendship, and honestly, that’s been the main idea of the series all along.
