In many parts of the world, having a pale, even complexion is a beauty must. Japan’s Geisha Facial is supposedly very effective at doing just that, and dates back at least a thousand years. It uses powdered uguisu no fun, which are the droppings of the Japanese bush warbler. Other historical whitening methods include toxic lead-based powders, and bleeding.

As offputting as bird poo might sound, it may actually be a safer alternative to skin whiteners that people use now.Though some skin whitening chemicals are banned, products containing them are often available under the counter, leading to dangerous complications.

It will run you about $30 US in Thailand, or about $250 in Tokyo, to have organically raised snails spend 45 minutes crawling across your face. The mucus - yes, mucus - they leave behind is filled with antioxidants and hyaluronic acid which supposedly help fight the signs of skin aging.
