DM was introducing the first concept and rules, but the Egyptian Gods were the most prominent things there. GX didn't introduce anything, but it did put a great stress on Fusion monsters. 5D's era was the first to introduce an entirely new class of cards in the form of Synchros. Zexal and Arc-V followed this tradition with Xyz and Pendulum monsters

Unlike the Rival character, these are usually a little bit more goofy, and less memorable, but accept the friendship between them and the hero a lot easier: Joey from DM, Chazz Princeton from GX, Crow from 5D's, Shark from Zexal, Silvio from Arc-V (who is remarkably similar to Chazz in many ways, mostly mannerism).

The main character usually comes with an ancient, powerful spirit watching over them: Pharaoh Atem for Yugi, Yubel for Jaden, Crimson Dragon for Yusei (sort of fits), Astral for Yuma, and all of Yuya's doppelgangers and Yuuto in particular.

All the protagonists of the show had a main character whose name started with Yu: YUgi Muto, Jaden YUki, YUsei Fudo, YUma Tsukumo and YUya Sakaki. The name is just one of several things they have incommon, others being wild haircuts, trademark trinckets and other cliches on the list.

The main protagonists' monster is usually a trademark for their represnting card type, and always comes with 2500 ATK; They also usually have benevolent effects, if any: Dark magician, Elemental Hero Neos, Stardust Dragon, Number 39: King Hope and Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon;

...5D's has a plethora of these: Signer Dragons, Earthbound Immortals, Meklord Emperors, the three Aesir and Timelords, Zexal has the Numbers, Barian, Numeron and the three Time-Space Dragons, and Arc-V has so far introducd the Dimensional Dragons.

*in Zexal, Kita has Kuriphoton, and Yuma obtains the Rainbow Kuriboh; Yuya is so far the only protagonist not using his own version of Kuriboh, but chances are he will eventually.

The Minor Antagonist Becomes Main Villain

What initially seems to be a minor threat ends up becomming related to the main villain of the story: Bakura turned out to be Zorc Necrophades, Nightshroud was a ruler of the world of Darkness, and Dark Mist was part of Don Thousand. The trope is absent in 5D's, though Red Nova's familiar may arguably fit the bill.
