Originally this film was supposed to be 'The Star Wars of horror films' with a top quality production design and a big story spread across a trilogy of films. Andrew Stanton was such a huge fan of the character of John Carter and was so convinced that audiences would know who he was that he insisted on an incredibly vague marketting campaign that left audiences puzzled and with no idea what to expect.

Taking advantage of Christian Bale's recent success with the 'Dark Knight' movies Warner Bros put him front and centre in their marketting of the film making audiences think he had a bigger role then he did. On top of that the movie spoiled its own twist in the trailers as well.
