The surname originally intended for Lieutenant Uhura became that of Ensign Hikaru Sulu, instead. The Enterprise's Asian helmsman was played by George Takei. Roddenberry planned to expand and develop the character during the series's second season, but Takei had agreed to appear in The Green Berets, alongside John Wayne.
