It is an essential part of the storyline as it is responsible for the zombies and the hellhounds plaging our charcaters. It helps create weapons like the Raygun and the Wunderwaffe.

Dempsey, while with the group from Shi no Numa, searches out on Der Riese for a weapon to use. He ends up finding the Wunderwaffe somewhere in the faciility and accidently shoots the MPD with the gun which causes it to teleport them all to another location, blowing Richtofens mind.
