Top 20 Most Chaotic Taskmaster Contestants

#20: Morgana Robinson

You have to be at least a little unhinged to become an impressionist in the first place, and Morgana Robinson certainly proved herself to be a mad genius. She had some of the most out-of-the-box solutions to her tasks – including, at one point cheating. Before the cheating, though, she won hearts with her mermaid proposal, described by Greg Davies afterwards as “psychotic”, in which she promised NOT to give Alex a venereal disease if he married her. She slid along the floor to get to the secret tower and, famously, could see through her blindfold when they were meant to be throwing paint on a soldier, something she only confessed to in the studio.

#19: Tim Key

Another cheater, Tim Key is remembered for two moments more than any other: pulling out the bath plug and having a vomit inducing solution to the watermelon task, namely, stuffing his face with as much watermelon as possible and trying not to be sick. While trying to empty the bath, he and Romesh adopted the same strategy of chucking all the water out, except that Tim’s plug was removed – something he insisted was an accident, at first. Unfortunately for both his cheating incidents, he was caught on camera, both trying to disguise his plug pulling and trying to eat more watermelon after the whistle.

#18: Bridget Christie

It’s rare to see Alex lose his temper, but throughout series 13, his patience was tested by Bridget Christie. Her three most painful to watch tasks were the interview, the one with the shoes, and, of course, the pedometer. She completely forgot how to walk when asked to get the pedometer to the highest number, doing anything EXCEPT walking or running like a normal person. It was absolutely infuriating, not to mention deeply bizarre. The encounters with Bridget were some of the only times we ever saw Alex snap at anyone in the entire series, and he broke more than once while trying to deal with Bridget.

#17: Lucy Beaumont

She had the rare distinction of arguably causing more chaos in the studio sections rather than during the tasks. Every item she brought on for the prize task and every question Greg asked her ended in a completely unpredictable way. That was despite her insisting at one point that she’s not anarchic at all and prefers to follow instructions to the letter. Although, she also did one of the weirdest things we’ve ever seen a “Taskmaster” contestant do and at one point bit Alex’s foot, all while trying to make a piece of performance art inspired by heads, shoulders, knees and toes.

#16: Daisy May Cooper

It takes a lot of bravery to sign up for “Taskmaster”, if for no other reason than putting up with the ritual humiliation. But it takes even more bravery to do a whole series while pregnant, which Daisy May Cooper was. One task that Alex said afterwards the show was concerned about was the one where they had to use an inflatable dinghy on wheels to move some exercise balls. Later, during one of the live tasks, they had to draw an animal but could only do three lines each turn; Daisy was drawing with Richard Herring guessing. It was a hippo, but he had no idea, and she ripped him to shreds in front of the audience for his ineptitude.

#15: Sam Campbell

Another contestant from the chaos of series 16, Sam Capmbell and Lucy Beaumont were quite the pair. Sam managed to break Greg Davies with his bizarre personality just as frequently as Lucy did, while being even more unpredictable. One of the most memorable tasks was when they were made to drive a road sweeper while obeying Alex’s esoteric “rules of the road”, made all the harder by the fact he didn’t have a driving licence. He then had to redo the task because he didn’t completely cross the finish line, throwing him into a rage where he told Alex he should be ashamed of himself.

#14: Munya Chawawa

Another contestant who caused chaos by his attempts to cheat was Munya in series 14. Aside from bringing on a wide array of prize tasks all with bizarre names and anecdotes about them, he rose to infamy during the task where they had to launch exercise balls at a mannequin called Bernard. It seemed, for a moment, like he’d done it, touching Bernard with fifteen balls. But then, the action replay clearly showed that he’d got the last ball to strike Bernard by nudging it with his knee. It was a shocking moment, and he thought he’d got away with it – but not much gets past the “Taskmaster” crew and their cameras.

#13: Dave Gorman

Of all the “Taskmaster” cheaters, Dave Gorman is the most infamous, cheating numerous times throughout series 3; he’s even boasted after the fact that there were incidents Alex didn’t even notice. But there’s nothing more chaotic than someone refusing to play by the rules, especially on “Taskmaster”, where the rules are already weird enough. They had to chuck a pea as far down the red carpet as possible, and they weren’t allowed to replace the pea with another. Gorman used the additional pea he persuaded Alex to bring him and stuck it onto the racket, trying to trick the show into thinking it was the same pea.

#12: Mike Wozniak

Lifelong friend of Greg Davies Mike Wozniak was a wildcard during his series, unpredictable in every task he attempted. But, of course, we all remember his stint for one thing and one thing only: the bonus task Alex gave only to him to fart while on the aeroplane. It was a moment unlike any other in “Taskmaster” history, where, after completing the task where they had to guess what had been battered, he made yet another attempt to pass some wind. In the studio afterwards, he explained what had gone on, making use of the fact he’s actually a doctor. He got a bonus point for releasing that haemorrhoid.

#11: Jason Mantzoukas

Apparently the only contestant to ever lose money competing in “Taskmaster” because he flew himself out from the US to participate, Jason Mantzoukas is already infamous as an agent of chaos. As well as smashing everything in his sights both during and after the tasks, he had some of the greatest prize tasks we’ve ever seen. The most legendary was possibly the jelly mold made from a plaster cast of Aisling Bea, something nobody else even came close to thinking of when asked to make a novelty mold. Most unhinged, though, was enlisting the production team to teach Alex a “lesson he’ll never forget”.

#10: Iain Stirling

Going on “Taskmaster” can really bring out the best in some people – or, in the case of Iain Stirling, it can bring out their worst. He was extremely competitive and often argumentative with Greg Davies – which is never a good strategy for getting points. But most shocking was this team task where they had to pile up items in a hammock, in which Stirling seized control and decided to ignore all of Lou Sanders’ suggestions. It was genuinely painful to see him bossing them around like a tyrant, and they still hadn’t forgiven him for how he was acting when it came time to do the scores. No wonder he apologised.

#9: Bob Mortimer

One of Blighty’s best surrealists, Bob Mortimer always did the unexpected in series five. His most bizarre “Taskmaster” moment came when they were tasked with giving Alex a “special cuddle”. To accomplish this, he had brought in his Audi and the pair of them climbed into the boot. We couldn’t SEE what was happening, but we could HEAR it, and it was very strange indeed. Other highlights included him making a short film about some fruit when asked to make a coconut look like a businessman, him encountering himself in a box full of Wotsits, and his banana peeling masterpiece.

#8: Noel Fielding

You always expect Noel Fielding to bring something unconventional to a show, and he didn’t disappoint in series 4. The group was tasked with making an exotic sandwich, sending Alex to the shops to get their supplies. Mel Giedroyc’s chocolate-heavy sandwich was chaotic enough, but by far, Noel’s decision to do an “exotic DANCE” sandwich takes the cake. It was more than a little disturbing to see him eat pieces of bread from Alex after forcing him to dance, but perhaps not QUITE as repulsive as the other baffling sandwich concoctions. There was raw yam and sausage rolls, salmon and kiwi, and a hot dog used as a garnish from the other contestants. Noel even ate some of Alex’s beard hairs; revolting.

#7: Josh Widdicombe

Though he’s not the first person who springs to mind when you think of “chaos” – and, indeed, may be one of the last – Josh knocked it out of the park with some of his “Taskmaster” moments. Most memorably, they were all asked to buy the Taskmaster the best gift for twenty quid, and Josh decided that the best gift he could give was to get “Greg” tattooed on his foot forever. Now, Josh has a permanent reminder not only of the fact that he was one of the stars who helped launch the show, but of all those special tasks he was forced to do completely alone where he counted how many beans were in a tin.

#6: Fern Brady

What’s not to love about autistic comedian Fern Brady and her memorable approaches to solving the tasks? Among her beset moments was the song written to classical music and the very last task in the series. With her song, she absolutely demolished the other contestants, despite giving herself some very difficult words to incorporate into the lyrics. In the final task, they were each presented with three things they’d asked Alex for weeks earlier, with Fern’s being coloured pens, potatoes, and some taxidermy. When she tried to throw the taxidermy bird over the caravan and cover the pens with the potatoes, everything fell apart. But it’s no wonder Greg got Fern’s song stuck in his head.

#5: James Acaster

We knew he was going to be a good contestant when he swore at Greg while he took a look at the object from someone else’s prize task, getting a stern telling-off. He went on to be completely unpredictable – other than his refusal to ever say “hello” to Alex in all of the tasks. By far, though, he excelled in the task to poke the most unexpected thing out of the hole in the ground the contestants had been dropped into. He ordered the cameras off and ended up putting his underpants on a stick and presenting them to Alex. The song he wrote with the musicians was also absurd.

#4: Sally Phillips

Also in series five was Sally Phillips, who produced some truly iconic task solutions that impressed the audience and Greg every single time. If throwing a jelly into a bucket wasn’t legendary enough, she also made two bona fide short films. The water cooler moment in which she created a piece of erotic fiction about having sex with a water cooler was a stroke of genius, even though she herself worried it might be, quote, “dull”. But then there was her version of special cuddle task, which involved covering Alex in cake, and her “extraordinary footage” of Alex in the womb. She got a standing ovation for that one.

#3: Liza Tarbuck

Anyone who gets Alex Horne to do THAT to a poor, innocent cake deserves to be on any list of the most chaotic comedians in the country. Who knew it was so entertaining just watching someone wander around London looking for the “Taskmaster” house and picking up rubbish? She was also the only one who couldn’t resist drawing a penis when they were all asked to make a dot-to-dot in a piece of foam; someone had to do it, and why not the woman who also subjected us to seeing Alex plant his bottom on a cake on national television? Unsurprisingly, Tarbuck won the series.

#2: Rhod Gilbert

Is Rhod Gilbert a complete psychopath? Probably not, but his performance on “Taskmaster” may have you thinking otherwise. It’s a toss-up between the blinking task and the creepiest prize task with which was the MOST uncomfortable to watch. On the one hand, seeing Rhod Gilbert force himself not to blink for seven minutes was torturous, and totally unnecessary given how bad everyone else was at it. On the other, taking a video of Greg Davies sleeping after hiding in his wardrobe for hours is also deeply sinister. But despite all that, he still couldn’t beat Kerry Godliman.

#1: Ed Gamble

Like Rhod Gilbert, Ed Gamble was ruthless in his pursuit of success. He was a machine in every single task, and it was no wonder that he stormed to victory at the end of the series. Some of his memorable moments included arguing with David Baddiel, pretending to be the donkey in real-life “Buckaroo”, and never flinching from some of the grosser tasks – like the one where they had to find gold rings and put them in a bowl. Even stranger was his short film about falling in love with a chickpea. But at least we learnt from Ed that the best place to hide an aubergine is inside the head of a baby.
