Penelope Soto (2013)

It’s always wise to be respectful to a judge while in their courtroom. But Penelope Soto didn’t show good judgment with her condition during her 2013 bail hearing for illegal Xanax possession. The giggling, disoriented Miami teen was clearly under the influence without even saying anything. When she did respond to Judge Jorge Rodriguez-Chomat, it was with slurred rambling and obscene gestures that landed her in jail for contempt. The outrageous footage helped popularize the A&E show “Court Cam” during its first season. Soto would later apologize for taking Xanax with alcohol when she returned to court after passing eight drug tests. All the charges were dropped, and she reportedly turned her life around.

Throwing the Book at Them (2019)

We’re all familiar with the colloquialism for a judge going particularly harsh. In 2019, Judge Richard Scotti of Clark County, Nevada got so fired up that he literally threw the book at a prospective juror. Tensions were high during the jury selection phase in Jose Azucena’s trial for serious sex crimes. One woman’s admission that she couldn’t be unbiased is arguably commendable. But Scotti was so angry about her rigidity that he wound up hurdling a book at the wall. This conduct so jeopardized jury morale that the Nevada Supreme Court ironically ordered a new trial with a less biased judge for Azucena. The defendant was ultimately convicted, while Scotti faced his own harsh judgments in the court of public opinion.

A Little Spat (2025)

A courtroom in Martin County, Florida was already anxious when Evan Paul McCulloch walked in in 2025. He was being held without bond for assaulting a police officer and threatening a judge, with a history of such behavior making him mentally unfit to stand trial. The world got to see what everyone was talking about when he spat at Judge William L. Roby during a routine status hearing. The shackled McCulloch then lunged toward the bench, managing to land a direct hit before being swarmed by bailiffs. Footage of the chaotic scene quickly circulated news outlets and social media due to its jarring nature. Less surprising was McCulloch getting hit with additional battery and threat charges.

Boston Makes a Statement (2020)

Talk about standing by your convictions. Spencer Alan Boston was actually not yet convicted when he appeared in court in Lebanon, Tennessee on a possession citation in 2020. He pleaded his case with a brief speech about how marijuana should be legal. He then produced a joint from his jacket, lit it up, and was escorted out by officers. Boston was charged with possession again and disorderly conduct, but he did succeed in spreading his controversial message. Video of his stunt caught a lot of attention, particularly among his fellow advocates for marijuana’s legalization. They do have to admit that it’s highly inappropriate to smoke anything while in court.

Citizen Keenan (2022)

Sovereign citizens facing justice has been a viral subgenre ever since Robert Peterson got tased outside of a courtroom in 2012. A particularly popular video finds Roslyn Keenan in Centerville, Michigan, charged with driving on a suspended license and obstruction. She represents herself in a preliminary hearing, presenting as a victim of the system. Judge Jeffrey Middleton eventually gets fed up with her talking over him. He slams her fringe ideology and notes her boastful misunderstanding of the law, before finding her in contempt. This clip quickly blew up as the perfect representation of the sovereign citizen movement as an absurd nuisance. After some time in jail, Keenan became more open to having a lawyer soften the case.

Middle School Reunion (2015)

Class reunions don’t get much more awkward or emotional than this. In 2015, Miami-Dade judge Mindy Glazer recognized the name of a man accused of burglary and leading police on a pursuit. It turns out she and Arthur Booth were friends in Nautilus Middle School, where Booth was known to be a sweet and gifted student. The revelation and Glazer’s compassion caused Booth to break down in tears. It also moved the world as a shocking, heartbreaking testament to how anyone can go down the wrong path. Booth was reportedly able to turn his life around after Glazer welcomed him out of prison nine months later. Sadly, though, he was charged with burglary again in 2024.

Redden Attacks (2024)

Doubling down on your crime has to be the worst response to a sentencing. But that's just what Deobra Redden did after he was convicted of attempted battery in Las Vegas. He seemed willing to accept his fate when he asked not to be incarcerated at his sentencing hearing, only to have a meltdown when Judge Mary Kay Holthus announced he'd be going to prison. She didn't even say for how long before Redden jumped on her and brawled with bailiffs. This dramatic incident became such a pop culture phenomenon that it was parodied on “Saturday Night Live.” Of course, Redden’s outburst was really no laughing matter. Later in 2024, he was sentenced to 26 to 65 years in prison for assault.

Driving Under Suspension (2024)

A courthouse in Pittsfield Township, Michigan accommodated Corey Harris with a virtual hearing after he was caught driving with suspended privileges. But it quickly occurred to Judge Cedric Simpson that the defendant was taking the meeting… while driving! The hearing abruptly ended with Simpson denying Harris’s bail and ordering him to surrender to police. The video blew up with social media mockery, but the story is actually pretty complicated. Harris was driving his wife to an urgent doctor's appointment. And he thought the suspension was being lifted after he paid off overdue child support, but failed to complete his part in the reinstatement process. After such a public humiliation, Harris was able to clear up the misunderstanding and get a full driving license.

#lawyercat (2021)

The whole world was locked up by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. Attorney Rod Ponton of Texas provided some much-needed levity, albeit unintentionally. He used his secretary’s computer to attend a virtual civil forfeiture hearing, not realizing that Zoom’s kitten face filter had been activated. The YouTube channel for the 394th District Court of Texas livestreamed video of Ponton struggling to turn off the filter, ever dedicated to a professional composure. Immediately after the meeting, his phone was blowing up. #lawyercat became a massive pop cultural phenomenon, inspiring spoofs and other intermedia references. Of course, Ponton’s professionalism in the process of becoming an Internet star was also inspiring for a difficult time.

America's Nicest Judge (2017-25)

In 2017, a woman identified only as Sarah appeared in court in Providence, Rhode Island for parking in a closed lot. Upon realizing that the lot opened exactly two seconds later, Judge Frank Caprio dismissed the ticket. This popularized his locally broadcast courtroom show “Caught in Providence,” which documented his uniquely ethical and humorous judgments based on a working-class background. A grieving mother, a 96-year-old, and several refugees are just a few defendants who went viral for Caprio’s mercy. He came to be known on social media as “America's Nicest Judge.” The world mourned his passing in 2025, as he showed that courtroom drama can become a public inquiry for positive reasons.
