10 Easter Eggs in DOOM Games

Welcome to MojoPlays, and today, we’re taking a look at 10 hidden references you can find across the “DOOM” games!

The Slayer’s Library
“DOOM Eternal” (2020)

In between all the ripping and tearing, a Slayer’s gotta have a den to rest and relax in. You know, somewhere to work out, chill, maybe do a bit of reading. But did you ever stop to see what kind of literature the Slayer is partaking in? Many of the titles pay tribute to other famous FPS games from “Duke Nukem” to “Unreal Tournament” to even “Deus Ex”. One of the books also references YouTuber Markiplier, who has cited “DOOM” as one of the first video games he ever played.

He’ll Be Back…
“DOOM” (2016) & “DOOM Eternal” (2020)

To see this reference for yourself, you have to do one seemingly impossible task - drown yourself in lava. In doing so, the Slayer will die, but as he sinks, he will slowly give the ol’ thumbs up before the screen goes black. This is a classic reference to the legendary film, “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” where the T-800 gives a final farewell as he perishes in molten lava. The only difference is the T-800 did its job. The Slayer…you just made him die before he made a dent in Hell’s forces.

A Tribute to Grandpappy Keen
Various

Prior to their innovation with the original “DOOM”, id Software created their own 2D shooter series known as “Commander Keen”, and the modern “DOOM” games have paid a ton of respect to the studio’s roots. Well, in its own unique way, and the references go all the way back to “DOOM II: Hell On Earth”. Level 32 contains a room where several Commander Keen clones hang from the ceiling, and yes, they count towards your killcount. The “DOOM” 2016 reboot, on the other hand, hides a skull on a pike that dons Keen’s football helmet. As for “DOOM Eternal”, you can not only find another corpse of the commander, but plenty of bucktoothed Dopefish in secret areas. Oh, and did we mention that id Software has confirmed that the Slayer is a descendant of B.J. Blazkowicz, who is a descendant of Commander Keen? Yeah, the connections go deep!

March of the Minis!
“DOOM” (2016)

It’s no secret that “DOOM” 2016 hides a couple of toys for the Slayer in every level. But did you ever pay attention to the toys’ designs? You’ll find plenty that pay tribute to older “DOOM” games and even enemies through their color scheme. However, there are a select few that pay tribute to other games from id Software and even Bethesda Softworks. Two figures are modeled after the Ranger and Phobos from the “Quake” series while another resembles the Authority Enforcer from id’s oft-forgotten 2010 game, “RAGE”. Of course, most of you probably just picked up Vaultguy in the Foundry and moved on with your lives.

A Slayer’s Best Friend
“DOOM Eternal” (2020)

Miss Slaughter is one of the most respectable streamers of the boomer shooter community and one of the most prominent “DOOM” fans in the scene. Unfortunately, tragedy struck for her in late 2020 when her shiba inu named Yoshi passed away due to medical complications. During “DOOM Eternal’s” post-launch support in late 2020, id Software was adding Master Level versions to the game. In memoriam to Yoshi, id Software hid a subtle reference to Miss Slaughter’s companion in the Master Level version of Teras Nabad. During the elevator sequence with the dog statues, try jumping behind one of them. If you see a “Y” marked behind it, you have found yourself the immortalized version of dear Yoshi, the greatest friend a Slayer could ask for.

Unholy Messages From Beyond
“DOOM 64” (1997)

We won’t lie - “DOOM 64” can be a grueling game. It’s great, but there are plenty of ways the game can unceremoniously off you. If you do wind up suffering yet another cheap death, there is something you can do to lighten things up a bit. Just sit and wait a minute or two. Eventually, you’ll start getting messages popping up on screen. Some will make fun of you while others are just poking fun at the game itself. What, you want an Easter egg more meaningful? Okay, fine. Boot up the 2020 remaster of “DOOM 64” and make your way to the second map of the “Lost Levels” expansion. One of the elevators hides a message that can only be seen when you quickly jump off. Guess one dev didn’t have much confidence in their level design skills.

THE BUN LIVES!!
“DOOM Eternal” (2020)

In 1994’s “DOOM II: Hell On Earth”, the story reveals that the demons had killed Doomguy’s adorable pet bunny, Daisy. Well, “DOOM Eternal” practically retcons this. In addition to the beautiful painting in the Slayer’s space station, Daisy can be found across a multitude of levels in various nooks and crannies. Try looking down chasms, in between cracks, or even at high ledges. Daisy can be found in so many spots that we have to wonder if the demons know they shouldn’t be messing around with anything meaningful to the Slayer.

Oh, You’re Finally…Dead?
“DOOM” (2016)

Yeah, old Commander Keen isn’t the only dead legend you’ll find in Hell. In one of the early combat encounters of Kadingir Sanctum, there is a small cave that you can enter. There aren’t any pickups or anything. Instead, you will find a skeleton wearing a horned helmet with an arrow stuck in its knee. Looks like the demons managed to get to the almighty Dovahkin. Not even a Dragon Shout could push back the forces of Hell.

The Secret Mastermind
“DOOM II: Hell On Earth” (1994)

This one’s an oldie but a goodie, and it’s a secret that remains to be one of the toughest to uncover for yourself. By now, you’re probably familiar with the simple layout of the Icon of Sin’s map in “DOOM II”. And we all know how tricky it is to shoot the Icon of Sin’s exposed brain. But what if we told you that you could end the fight with very little effort? If you want to be a dirty little hacker and turn off clipping, you can just walk right through the bottom part of the Icon of Sin to find a human head. But that isn’t just any head - that’s one of the key developers responsible for “DOOM’s” inception: John Romero!

Gulami’s!
“DOOM Eternal” (2020)

Romero is not the only person to be immortalized in a “DOOM” game. He was for a time, but Hugo Martin has made a name for himself as the director of the 2016 reboot, “DOOM Eternal”, and “DOOM: The Dark Ages”. And you can find his cheeky smiling face in “Eternal”! In some of the levels that take place on Earth, you may come across some bags of dried meat and pizza boxes made by a brand called “Gulami’s”. And yes, that is Martin’s face on every one of those products. They aren’t worth eating, though; according to “Eternal’s” lore, Gulami’s was shut down because its food was causing their customers’ organs to rot from the inside. Even with Martin’s loving smile, you can’t trust any corporation in the world of “DOOM”.
