Linkedin says it will own business networking, problem is: I doubt it.
Linkedin is an idea and concept that has grown on me - mainly due to what some say about it - but the problem is that Facebook is growing very quickly in the 25 and over segment. That is Linkedin’s backyard… and Facebook’s growth in that segment suggests that relationships created in that key market will go Facebook’s way, and not Linkedin’s.
The problem?
Linkedin is sterile, and cold. Facebook is not. And, Facebook connects people that know one another, Linkedin does not: it connects people that wish they knew one another, or pretend they knew one another…
My wife is a good example. She’d never be caught dead on Linkedin, but she increasingly uses Facebook for work. That’s supposedly Linkedin’s market, but Facebook ability to connect schoolmates/classmates gives it a huge advantage over Linkedin.
If Linkedin was smart, they’d put some pressure on Facebook by encouraging connections via schools.
Problem?
Who uses Linkedin to begin with?
Considering that Peter Thiel is investors in both, expect a merger of one kind or another in the next year, as Facebook looks to IPO in 2008, or sell for $2B+ in 2007.
