Top 10 Movie and Television Fandoms

Faithful, fierce and seemingly infinite in number, fandoms have slowly infiltrated the lives of thousands of people on the planet. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we're counting down our picks for the top 10 movie and television fandoms.

For this list we’re taking a look at fans and their communities, entitled fandoms, who have a vocal presence in the media, at conventions and online.

#10: Browncoats
"Firefly" (2002-03)

You can’t take the sky from these fans. After one season, Fox infamously cancelled the filming of Firefly, which prompted an overwhelming backlash. Ten years later, fans still continue to hope for a reboot. Jayne’s tricolour hat is a popular cosplay piece easily spotted at conventions. Fan dedication prompted the filming of a feature film conclusion to the series entitled Serenity, which was released in 2005. These fans know you can’t stop the signal.

#9: Bronies
"My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" (2010-)

Do you believe that Friendship is Magic? The fans of My Little Pony’s reboot certainly do. Fans of Hasbro’s show about the goings-on in Equestria enjoy the series for its animation, its plot and its songs. Fans usually collect their favourite ponies for display purposes while some sport wings or horns for cosplay. Though some fans have been mocked for their interest in what is perceived as a kids show, Bronies preach kindness and compassion.

#8: Tributes
"The Hunger Games" (2012-)

Holding three fingers in the air and whistling make up the not so secret code of this fandom. With all of the buzz around Jennifer Lawrence as an actress in general, it’s not surprising that the base of fans for this novel turned film trilogy is so large. Fans of Suzanne Collins’ futuristic dystopia, wear mocking jay pins, practice archery, hate the Capitol and deeply identify with their Districts. All of them await the rebellion.

#7: Ringers
"Lord of the Rings" (2001-)

Fans of J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels and Peter Jackson’s film adaptations dedicated themselves to studying the world of Middle Earth. Fans even go so far as to learn how to speak, read and write Elvish - among other tongues used throughout the series. Most fans identify with a specific creature be they elves, dwarves or hobbits and project that peoples’ personality by asking for second breakfasts, taking up archery or having a fascination with gold.

#6: SPN Family
"Supernatural" (2005-)

Saltgunners, the term applied to members of the Supernatural fandom, are very intense individuals with swift reflexes. These fans know how to keep ghosts at bay, how to make a deal with a demon and most importantly, that Bon Jovi can be relevant. They lay protective rings of salt on their window and doorframes and when they say to hell and back – they mean it literally. For these fans family doesn’t end with blood.

#5: Twihards
"Twilight" (2008-12)

Edward or Jacob? The eternal question that every fan of this series has longed debated. These fans are completely dedicated to their favourite characters and accept vampire who sparkle in the sun are factual lore. Fans enjoy rereading the books and writing copious amounts of fanfiction – Fifty Shades of Grey was actually based off of Twilight fanfiction – while they sit in wait for the

#4: Whovians
"Doctor Who" (1963-)

Bowties are cool, don’t blink and I’ll just sonic it, are all phrases only true fans of Doctor Who understand. The show, which recently celebrated its Fiftieth Anniversary, is so popular that the fandom name has been added to the Oxford Dictionary. Fans spend their time trying to sing their theme song or emulating the Tardis noise, reading up on the intricacies of time and comparing notes on who the next Doctor will be.

#3: Potterheads
"Harry Potter" (2001-11)

These fans identify more deeply with their Hogwarts house than with their personal nationalities. They even created their own genre of music called Wizard Wrock which has catapulted artists like Ministry of Magic and the Parseltongues to fame on itunes and online. Cosplaying daily is completely fine with these fans and engaging in mock duels is normal when ones honour is slighted. Pets are often named after characters and Hedwig’s theme is their rally song.

#2: Star Wars Fans
“Star Wars” (1977-)

Fans of George Lucas’ science fiction films have been known to camp out for weeks in advance of movie premieres. Many spend their down time cosplaying in the billowing robes of Darth Vader or expertly handling a light saber in a duel. Collectibles are another way for fans to demonstrate their adoration for the franchise while others have perfected the tone and intonation of their favourite characters like Yoda. To them the Force is real.

Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions:

Oncers
“Once Upon a Time” (2011-)

Sherlockians

#1: Trekkies
"Star Trek" (1966-)

They also feel very strongly about their response to the ultimate question - Kirk or Picard? Fans enjoy donning their uniforms, dusting off their phasers and brushing up on their Klingon in case the Enterprise suddenly docks on their front porch with a mission for them to explore the final frontier.
