"Emily in Paris" was created by Darren Star, who is known for being the creator of the HBO series “Sex and the City.” That show became iconic for its fashion, in large part due to the work of costume designer Patricia Field. Field and Star collaborated again for this 2020 show, and their success is evident from the very first episode. When Emily first goes to her office, she wears a button-up top printed with a Parisian scene, including the Eiffel Tower. It’s a tongue in cheek reference to her starry-eyed optimism about the City of Lights and shows her new co-workers right away what kind of person they’re going to be working with.

#9: Sylvie's Green Dress "French Ending"

Emily’s Parisian boss, Sylvie, is the epitome of the elegant French style that so many wish they could achieve. Patricia Field said that the character “was the expression of classic French chic. No bright colors, an effortless consciousness that Paris is famous for. Sylvie represented that woman to me.” While her simple office looks are enviable, this green dress that she wears for a red carpet event is the most stunning outfit she wears on the show. It’s a one-shoulder design and features a sky-high slit, baring just the right amount of skin.

#8: Emily’s Structural White Dress "An American Auction in Paris"

In the penultimate episode of Season One, Emily attends a benefit to raise money for the American Friends of the Louvre (AFL) and convinces designer Pierre Cadault to donate a dress for the charity auction. When the woman who was supposed to model the gown fails to arrive, however, Emily has to take her place. Of course, avant-garde designers Grey Space end up making a big mess out of things and turning the dress into something of an artistic statement. Behind the scenes, the sculptural white gown was actually designed by Stephane Rolland.

#7: Emily’s Yellow Maxi Skirt & Top "Emily in Paris"

In the first episode, when Emily ventures out to attempt to order pastries and ends up meeting Mindy in the park, she wears a printed Ganni top and maxi skirt. The yellow printed ensemble looks like a dress because it’s paired with a thick black belt, but it’s actually made up of a silk camisole style top and separate skirt. Without the belt, the outfit would be a bit too breezy for Parisian fashion, but the darker element anchors it, adding a slight edge to an otherwise sunny look.

#6: Camille's Sheer Polka Dot Top "Faux Amis"

If Sylvie represents the chic older French woman, then Camille represents the effortlessly cool French girl that Americans desperately want to epitomize. Her style on the show took inspiration from model Caroline de Maigret. Camille always seems to be rocking an oversized leather moto jacket, but often pairs it with something light and feminine. In episode five when she brings Emily to the Van Gogh exhibit, she wears a plaid See by Chloé dress topped with a sheer polka dot top with extreme puffed sleeves. The way she casually throws her jacket on top of this outfit is a level of cool we can only dream of achieving.

#5: Emily’s Lilac Combo "Faux Amis"

By the midpoint of the show, Emily has become a full-fledged social media influencer due to her @EmilyinParis account and she has the wardrobe to match. When working on a campaign for Swedish bed company Hästens, Emily comes up with the idea to showcase the company’s products in famous locations around Paris. While lounging in the public bed display, she wears a multicolor ensemble with a focus on lilac. She pairs an Aalto cropped sweater with decorative buttons with leather ankle boots in the same shade by Dorateymur.

#4: Emily’s Hot Pink Jacket "A Kiss Is Just a Kiss"

Field said of her outfits for the show, “ I always want my wardrobe picks to be original and interesting. I believe these two features create classics that last through the years as opposed to trendy and gone tomorrow.” While shopping for flowers in her arrondissement, Emily first meets Camille, who tries to help her negotiate with the difficult shop owner. During this scene, Emily is wearing a bright fuchsia coat by Kenzo that goes perfectly with the rosy blooms she purchases. The coat is a wool cashmere blend that is probably just the thing for a chilly Parisian morning.

#3: Emily’s Black Tulle Gown "Masculin Féminin"

Many are making comparisons between Emily’s wardrobe and the clothes worn by Carrie Bradshaw on “Sex and the City,” particularly in the two-part finale which takes place in Paris. Perhaps the most reminiscent dress is this voluminous tulle outfit that Emily wears to an event in the show’s second episode. It’s no wonder that she catches the attention of perfumier Antoine Lambert! Pat Field even acknowledged that this particular look was a direct reference, saying “Emily's black tulle skirt in Episode 102 is an homage to Carrie's tulle skirt in the series finale of ‘Sex and the City.’"

#2: Emily’s Plaid Suit & Red Beret "Sexy or Sexist"

One of Patricia Field’s favorite looks from the show was seen in episode three when Emily attends an advertising video shoot for a perfume. She wears a plaid shorts and blazer combo by Veronica Beard with a Chanel Lambskin Flap Bag. She tops it off with a classically Parisian red beret. Field said of the outfit, "As Emily spends time in France, she mixes in a little bit of Paris to her wardrobe.” This is the sort of look that everyone imagines themselves in during their Parisian fantasies. Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions. Emily’s Black, White & Pink Outfit "Cancel Couture" Mindy's Floral Wrap Dress "Ringarde" Emily’s Head to Toe Green Outfit "Faux Amis" Emily’s Floral Puffer "Cancel Couture" Emily’s Off the Shoulder Floral Mini Dress "Sexy or Sexist"

#1: Emily’s Black Off the Shoulder Dress "Ringarde"

In the show’s sixth episode, Emily attends the ballet with her new beau, Thomas, and wears an epic outfit for the occasion. Her classic little black dress features plenty of volume and is paired with a dainty headpiece that gives the look a unique spin. For this scene, Field wanted to pay direct homage to silver screen legend Audrey Hepburn because of actress Lily Collins’s resemblance to her. She said, “So when she goes to the ballet, it was the right opportunity for me to do that. I was worried people are going to say 'Oh, she copied Audrey Hepburn,' but I couldn't resist it.”
