Everything We Know About the Book of Boba Fett

Everything We Know About the Book of Boba Fett
VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton WRITTEN BY: Timothy MacAusland
Disney+ is off to a great start when it comes to "Star Wars" content, and this show appears to be its next big hit. For this list, we'll be looking at this upcoming “Star Wars” spinoff series and breaking down all the major things that's known about it so far. Our countdown includes Release Date, The Cast, Connection to Other Shows, and more!

#10: Release Date

True to “Star Wars” form over the last few years, “The Book of Boba Fett” will give Disney+ subscribers something to chew on from a galaxy far, far away in time for the holiday season. Though both seasons of “The Mandalorian” debuted earlier in the fall, this time we’ll have to wait until December 29th to check in with our first favorite bounty hunter. This is more than likely the case so as not to steal any of “Hawkeye’s” thunder, which will wrap up the week before on Disney+. There’s no word yet on how many episodes we’ll be getting, but seeing as the first two seasons of “The Mandalorian” both got eight, don’t expect any more, if not slightly less.

#9: The Story

As many will remember, Season 2 of “The Mandalorian” wrapped up with Boba Fett aiding Mando and the gang boarding Moff Gideon’s cruiser during the rescue of Grogu, essentially squaring the debt between him and Mando. In the post-credits scene, Fett returns to Jabba’s palace on Tatooine with Fennec Shand and usurps a very portly Bib Fortuna of his seat on the throne. From here, “The Book of Boba Fett” will continue this story arc, as Fett looks to fill the Jabba-sized hole in the crime syndicate he left behind. Obviously, he’ll be met with opposition from some of Jabba’s contemporaries, but as we clearly know, you don’t mess with the Fett.

#8: The Main Characters

As the title indicates, the bulk of the narrative will give us the Boba Fett story arc we never got but always wanted. Alongside him will be his trusted companion Fennec Shand, as their relationship will likely be further fleshed out. As fans will remember, Fett is responsible for saving Shand when she was left for dead in “Mandalorian” Season 1, replacing her injured parts with cybernetics. Naturally, proving there truly is honor among thieves, Shand swore her services to Fett, which looks to be extending here. While we don’t know exactly how long this partnership will play out, expect this to be addressed as Shand becomes a more fully formed character.

#7: The Cast

As Fett and Shand are the only confirmed characters as of this point, the only confirmed actors are naturally Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen, reprising their roles. That said, don’t be surprised if we see some other notable names join the fray, be they playing new characters or familiar ones. To that extent, one actor whose return could make a lot of sense is Timothy Olyphant, who appeared as Cobb Vanth in Season 2 of “The Mandalorian.” A marshal of sorts for the Tatooine town Mos Pelgo, Vanth could find himself in direct opposition to Fett should Fett’s restructured crime syndicate encroach on his borders. Seeing as Vanth used Fett’s armor after the latter’s supposed death, there may be multiple scores to settle.

Hardcore “Star Wars” stans will know the name Dave Filoni for essentially revitalizing the TV side of things, from his work on “The Clone Wars” series to “Rebels” all the way up to “The Mandalorian.” As expected, Filoni will be returning to executive produce “The Book of Boba Fett,” alongside “The Mandalorian’s” Jon Favreau and “Star Wars” stalwart Kathleen Kennedy. Joining them on the producorial side of things, however, will be acclaimed director Robert Rodriguez, who will be taking on a larger role after directing an episode from “Mandalorian” Season 2. This may be on the nose, but sufficient to say, the force is strong with this bunch.

Speaking of the big names behind the scenes, the ones helming the episodes in question have us feeling very confident, even if only based on their prior successes. The aforementioned Robert Rodriguez reportedly directed several episodes for “Book of Boba Fett,” and for those who don’t remember, he was behind the standout “Mandalorian” episode “The Tragedy.” Joining him likely for single episodes will also be producers Filoni and Favreau, who combined to direct four episodes in “The Mandalorian’s” first two seasons. Also returning is Bryce Dallas Howard, who spearheaded an episode in each season of “Mandalorian.” Though other big names could be announced, we’re already in pretty capable hands.

Obviously, it wouldn’t be “Star Wars” without some seriously stunning setpieces. While the first trailer for “The Book of Boba Fett” didn’t give away many major action sequences, we do see a helmetless Fett and Shand squaring off against some baddies with some pretty inconvenient shields. Obviously, knowing Fett and Shand’s capabilities, we aren’t too worried, but it does make us that much more ready to see a whole season’s worth of what was teased in “The Mandalorian” as they bowled over a gaggle of helpless stormtroopers. Between these shows and “Aquaman,” Temuera Morrison is back. And you know what? He’s still got it.

#3: Connection to Other Shows

Upon the success of “The Mandalorian,” it was no surprise that Disney would want to expand the “Star Wars” universe on the TV side of things. Though there are plenty of shows in development, “The Book of Boba Fett” is set to be the first of these spinoffs, and could very well lay some groundwork for some of the others. Though 2022’s “Andor” and “Obi-Wan Kenobi” series will likely be separate in different time periods, the “Ahsoka” series and “Mandalorian” Season 3 could very well be taking place concurrently. As the latter could be tying in to the fate of Mandalore, be on the lookout for hints of Boba getting involved in that affair somehow.

#2: Old-School Bounty Hunters May Appear

Top 10 Star Wars Bounty Hunters

Though we never got the Boba Fett movie that was being developed alongside some of the other “Star Wars” spinoffs, “The Mandalorian” has more or less filled that void. However, it’s likely that “The Book of Boba Fett” will delve even further into the world of bounty hunting that has been for so long teased to us. Ever since “The Empire Strikes Back,” we were absolutely enamored with the kooky characters presented to us alongside Boba, such as Dengar and Bossk. Though Boba was obviously always the coolest character, we’ve been jonesing to see these characters and others return in live-action in expanded roles. And with Boba taking over for Jabba on Tatooine, their appearance isn’t out of the question.

In an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Boba Fett actor Temuera Morrison intimated that “The Book of Boba Fett” would be filling in some gaps of the character’s history, particularly the period between “Return of the Jedi” and “The Mandalorian.” Infamously, Boba seemingly died in the former after being blindsided by a blinded Han and consumed by the sarlacc. Obviously he survived, but we might finally get to witness his escape from the desert creature. Furthermore, it’s likely we’ll get to see how he spent the next five-odd years living without armor, during which time he likely became the immortal badass we know him as today.
