From the very first episode, This Is Us has caught us off-guard with its various twists and turns. Even when we’ve been prepared for a game-changing plot point, such as Jack Pearson’s fate, the writers always find a new way to throw us for a loop. In the heartbreaking episode, Super Bowl Sunday, we finally learned how exactly Jack died. The showrunners have tossed yet another wrench into the machine, however, as the promo for the Season 2 finale features actor Milo Ventimiglia donning old man makeup.
What does this mean for the Pearson family? Could Jack still be alive? While audiences won’t get any official answers until March 13, we have a few theories regarding Old Man Jack.
3. It’s Jack’s Brother
It was revealed in Season 2 that Jack had a brother named Nick. It’s been implied that Nick died in the Vietnam War, but what if he actually survived, made it back to the States, and grew up to look just like his older brother? Little Nicky notably wears glasses in flashbacks just like “Old Man Jack” in the promo. This would also offer leeway to keep Ventimiglia on the show, albeit as a different character.
2. It’s An Alternate Universe
From Scandal, to Friends, to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, many shows have explored what might have been if certain characters made different decisions. This Is Us could deliver a “what if” episode where Jack didn’t go back for Kate’s dog and got to see his kids become adults. Now that would be the least darkest timeline!
1. Rebecca Is Going To Die
Even with Jack’s death out of the way, This Is Us will never stop finding new ways to break our hearts. With that said, Rebecca’s death is inevitable and it wouldn’t be surprising if she saw Jack while passing into the afterlife. In any case, Mandy Moore and Milo Ventimiglia will be sharing at least one scene in the Season 2 finale.
