Things Are About To Get Bloody
Who would have guessed that an anime series starring Samuel L. Jackson and Ron Perlman with music provided by The RZA would have made for such a fun time? While the narrative was certainly linear at times, there can be no denying that Afro Samurai made up for all faults by providing copious amounts of violently entertaining action. And again, it starred Samuel L. Jackson. What more could you need?
The series and its follow-up film were released a fair while ago, however it has recently been announced that Samuel L. Jackson will be producing a live action adaptation. Despite previous cinematic exploits such as Ghost in the Shell and Death Note falling woefully short of successful, we actually have high hopes given its balls to the wall premise. Should they include these three things, its at least guaranteed to be a fun ride!
#3: Ron Perlman as Justice
He’s the creepy as hell gunslinger that killed Afro’s father and who dreams of becoming God. Honestly, the only reason this character worked so well as a villainwas the fact that the famed Hellboy actor made every delivery sound as menacing as possible. Even if they get a different actor to portray his zombie-esque physicality, the original voice needs to stay!
#2: Hold. Nothing. Back.
The series knew exactly what it was; a slick and gory action-romp filled to the brim with anime tropes. While a live-action version will most likely have to reconfigure key plot points to make a coherent narrative, we’re still expecting to see the spirit of the original show shine on through. This means copious amounts of well-choreographed fight scenes that blur the line of reality and fantasy. We want to see Afro dodging bullets, slicing limbs and kicking all manner of ass with nothing but his sword and sandals. Leave logic at the door.
#1: Samuel L. Jackson as Ninja-Ninja
While he did indeed provide the voice for Afro Samurai, the majority of the actor’s spoken dialogue in the series came from the secondary character of Ninja-Ninja. As Afro’s wise-cracking companion, Ninja-Ninja provided both levity and hilarity as he commented on each battle as only Samuel L. Jackson can; spouting a whole lot of expletives. If he’s not going to play the titular hero, then he HAS to star as the funniest character.
