5 Original Projects Coming to Disney’s Streaming Service

By nick-spake,

Disney is moving forward with launching their own streaming service, complete with a library of animated classics, as well as the Star Wars and Marvel movies. For now, however, it appears that Marvel shows like Daredevil and Jessica Jones will remain Netflix exclusives. Nevertheless, Disney has plans to populate their streaming service, which will likely launch in fall 2019, with several original movies and shows.

5. A Live-Action Sword in the Stone Remake

Based on T. H. White’s The Once and Future King, The Sword in the Stone was the final animated feature the studio released before Walt Disney’s death. Where the 1963 film put a comedic spin on the Arthurian legend, it’s possible that this live-action remake will take a more serious approach based on the talent involved. Bryan Cogman of Game of Thrones is writing the script with Brigham Taylor of The Jungle Book and Christopher Robin producing. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo of 28 Weeks Later is also in talks to direct the picture.

4. Noelle

Set to come out on November 8, 2019, this Christmas comedy stars Anna Kendrick as Santa’s daughter. Marc Lawrence (Miss Congeniality) directs an impressive cast that also includes Bill Hader, Billy Eichner, and Shirley MacLaine.

Noelle could be Disney’s answer to A Christmas Prince, which 53 people apparently watched for 18 days in a row on Netflix.

3. A Monsters, Inc. Animated Series

On the television side, we have a Monsters, Inc. animated series to look forward to. There are several questions that remain, however. Will it be CGI animated or transition to traditional animation like Tangled: The Series? Will John Goodman and Billy Crystal reprise their roles as Sulley and Mike Wazowski, respectively? Will it take place before or after the events of the original film and could it be linked to Monsters University? Above all else, are they going to make that Boo is the witch from Brave theory a reality?

2. A Live-Action Marvel Show

While The Defenders are staying with Netflix, Disney has plans to produce another live-action Marvel show for their own streaming service. Since this service is aiming to be more family friendly, chances are the Marvel series won’t be as hard-hitting as The Punisher. Let’s just hope it’s more like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and less like Inhumans. In an ideal world, it’d be an Agent Carter revival.

1. A Live-Action Star Wars Show

While there have been a couple of animated Star Wars shows in recent years, we’ve been eagerly awaiting a live-action series set in a galaxy far, far away. Disney will finally grant our wish via their new streaming service. It’s unclear what exactly the series will be about, but we’d give anything for it to focus on the Knights of the Old Republic.

Bonus:

Disney has a lot more in the works for their streaming service, including a High School Musical series, a 3 Men and a Baby remake, Tom McCarthy’s Timmy Failure, Mark Waters’ Magic Camp, Julia Hart’s Stargirl, Ericson Core’s Togo, The Paper Magician, Don Quixote, and Lady and the Tramp. Talk about a full plate.
