The X-Men Franchise Goes Hella Dark in The New Mutants Trailer

By josh-selinger,

The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone has taken a turn for the gritty in the very first trailer for The New Mutants, a somber-yet-thrilling X-Men offshoot. Following in the spirit of last year’s Logan, The New Mutants promises a reliance on character drama and original plotting, something that ain’t always easy to achieve when it comes to comic-book flicks. In fact, you have to squint real hard to truly make the Marvel movie connection, as the trailer conjures up more of a creepy, horror-thriller Shutter Island/ A Cure for Wellness vibe than that of a cookie-cutter superhero blockbuster.

IMDB describes the film as follows:

Five young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves.

There’s a reason this dropped on Friday the 13th.

The film features rising stars Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Anya Taylor-Joy (Split), Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) and Alice Braga (Elysium). It haunts theaters on April 13th, 2018.
