Video Game Classics: Earthbound

Some games will live forever as Classics. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’ll be taking a look at 1994’s role-playing game “Earthbound.”

Known as “Mother 2: Giygas Strikes Back” in Japan, this game was co-created by Ape and HAL laboratory, and published by Nintendo for the SNES.

The follow-up to the Japan-exclusive game called “Mother”, “Earthbound” eventually came to America as a stand-alone title.

While it was originally a retail failure, due Western audiences being relatively unfamiliar with the role-playing genre, it quickly earned itself a dedicated following. This was due to its amazing story, unique gameplay, memorable characters, and comedic depiction of American culture.

An instant classic, Earthbound takes place in the year 199X, and stars four primary heroes, known as the “chosen four.” The main character of which is Ness, a young boy possessing strong psychic abilities. On his quest, he is joined Paula, another child with similar powers, a genius named Jeff, and a martial arts master named Poo.

The story began with Ness having been awoken by a meteorite landing near his home. Investigating the crash site, he encountered an insect-like alien named Buzz Buzz, who tells him that he is from the future, when a hostile alien called Giygas has dominated the universe.

As a result, Ness is instructed to journey to defeat the alien in the present, before it becomes too powerful. To accomplish this, Ness must seek out eight sanctuaries that will combine his psychic abilities with the Earth itself.

On his quest, Ness visits many cities, where he meets his friends and allies. These include the towns of Onett, Twosen, Threed and Fourside. In addition, players must explore caves and dungeons, an icy land called Winters, an East Asian territory, and a dream world. The entire time, they must battle Giygas’ army and Starmen warriors.

Earthbound is especially notable for ditching the traditional use of random encounters, or the use of a world map. At the same time, the game retains the need to gain experience points through battle. These work to increase character attributes, such as your group’s offense, defense, maximum health and psychotic points, which fuel your attacks.

An iconic RPG, Earthbound’s characters and locations have appeared in the Smash Bros. series over the years, and fans continue to wait for a 3D follow-up to arrive.
