Video Game Classics: Battletoads

Some games will live forever as classics. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’ll be taking a look at the brutally difficult, but wildly popular action platformer “Battletoads.”

Developed by Rare Productions for the Nintendo Entertainment System, it has since been ported to several other consoles, including the Sega Genesis and Gameboy.

Created to compete with the popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game series, this game tells the tale of the three Battletoads named Rash, Pimple and Zits, all named after skin conditions.

Together, with the help of Professor T. Bird, the trio was in the process of escorting Princess Angelica back to her home planet. However, she was abducted by the evil Space Queen when Pimple decided to take her out on a pleasure cruise. Brought to the Queen’s home world of Ragnarok, the remaining Toads were charged with a daring rescue mission.

Touching down on the planet, they faced countless enemy forces, planetary hazards and devious traps, all while navigating inhospitable terrain, making their way down caves, and onward toward the Tower of Shadows.

Playing the game with up to two players in the roles of Rash and Zits, gamers discovered that the adventure was much different than anything they imagined.

Instead of a standard beat ‘em up, this adventure focused on a wide assortment of obstacles and an insane level of difficulty.

More importantly, it was quickly loved for its excellent soundtrack and focus on humor. This included the Toads' ability to transform their body parts into gigantic appendages, using them to deal devastating attacks. These included growing fists, enlarged boots, forming into the shape of a wrecking ball, and sprouting horns while head butting enemies.

One of the most visually stunning adventures to come out of the 8-bit era, Battletoads was also unique for featuring several types of levels which switched between traditional 2D stages and stunning 3D segments.

The most difficult of these stages were the racing segments, in which players had to memorize and dodge obstacles at high speed, all while outrunning lethal enemies. Other stages included climbing and jumping sections called “Snake Mazes”, an underwater level with spikes and monsters, as well as two tower climbing levels.

A beloved franchise by a legendary company, many fans continue to wait anxiously for Microsoft, who happens to own Rare, to re-release this adventure on Xbox Live, while reviving the series.
