The ancient capital of the country, Mdina is a walled city with a population of less than three hundred. Often called the Silent City, this region is a must-see for visitors. Located in the middle of Malta Island, this fortified city sits atop a hill and offers splendid views of the surrounding countryside. It is estimated that Mdina was first settled in 700 BC, making it the oldest city on the island. Mdina is one of many artistic and architectural triumphs located in Malta.
The Three Cities
Known as the Three Cities, Vittoriosa, Cospicua and Senglea are three fortified towns found on the island of Malta. Originally, these cities were the political and cultural center of the country prior to the building of Valletta. Today, they remain important harbor towns and icons of the area’s history. Largely unvisited by tourists, they also offer a glimpse at everyday life in Malta.
Vittoriosa
One of Malta’s most historically significant cities, Vittoriosa is sometimes called the cradle of Maltese history. Originally known as Birgu, its name was changed to Vittoriosa to reflect its victorious role in the area’s history. Located on the Grand Harbour, the city lies across from Valetta. Because of its strategic location, Vittoriosa is home to one of the island’s oldest fortifications, Fort St. Angelo. Full of architectural treasures, this maritime city is filled with sites older than those in the capital city.
Cospicua
Also located on the Grand Harbour is Cospicua. Being the largest of the Three Cities, it was also the last to be fortified. By many, the city is still known by its original name, Bormla. While this area was heavily damaged during the Second World War, it has since been rebuilt and today is an important market town.
Senglea
Senglea is a small city, and Malta’s most heavily populated. Known today for its beautiful views of Valetta from across the Grand Harbour, this city was first fortified in 1551. It was given the title of the invincible city because of the city’s resistance to the Great Siege of 1565. Senglea is often called by its original name, Isla, which likely refers to its location on a peninsula. The city has also preserved its artistic legacy, with remarkable architecture and sculptures located throughout.
