One of Europe’s smallest countries, Malta is also one of the continent’s most densely populated, with just over four hundred thousand inhabitants. Comprised of a cluster of islands, Malta is found in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. Of the country’s three main islands, Malta Island is the largest and is home to the country’s capital and its largest city.
Main Cities
Located in central Malta, Birkirkara is the country’s largest and most densely inhabited city. Valletta serves as the country’s de facto capital, and the entire city has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage Site list since 1980.
An Important Location
The location of the Maltese Islands has made the country vitally important, strategically. It has therefore been ruled by a number of different world powers throughout its history, though today it is an independent country.
Languages
The country’s national language is Maltese, which is an amalgamation of Italian, Sicilian and English. Alongside this Semitic language, English is also commonly spoken.
Religion
Malta is well-known as a highly Christian country. In fact, it is estimated that roughly 98 per cent of the country’s population adheres to the faith. Roman Catholicism is confirmed as the state religion in the country’s constitution. Malta features a ratio of approximately one Catholic Church per one thousand inhabitants.
Tourism
Tourism is an important part of the Maltese economy, with about 1.2 million people visiting the country each year. Famous for its abundance of historical attractions and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the country has been described as one large museum. Plus, with cruises along its many adjacent waterways, lively nightlife and delicious food and drink, it’s no wonder this tiny country continues to draw in tourists.
