The United States’ oldest public art museum, the Wadsworth Atheneum was built in 1842. Located in downtown Hartford, the building housing the museum is itself a work of art. Within its walls are found impressionist paintings, modernist works, and other masterpieces.
Found in Old Lyme, Connecticut, The Florence Griswold Museum honors this former resident of the area. Now an art and history museum, it is celebrated for its collection American Impressionist paintings.
The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum is one of the few museums in the United States’ that does not amass its own collection of art, and is one of the foremost contemporary art galleries in the country.
Yale's Cultural Institutions
Located in New Haven, Yale University is also home to a number of distinguished cultural institutions. The Yale Center for British Art is home to the most extensive collection of British art outside of the United Kingdom. Meanwhile the Yale University Art Gallery features a major collection of art from an assortment of cultures and time periods, in various buildings across the campus. The Yale Repertory Theater is famous for its productions of both new plays and modern versions of the standards.

With an extensive wine trail snaking through the state, Connecticut is home to a number of vineyards and wine tastings.
