All musicians have to start somewhere. For Alessia Cara, that somewhere was YouTube. At just 13 years of age she started her own YouTube channel. The future Def Jam singer would post covers of songs by the likes of Justin Timberlake and Amy Winehouse as a way of practicing her craft while simultaneously growing her fan base. The videos were occasionally recorded inside of her closet because she didn’t want to annoy the rest of her family! Talk about modest beginnings. The videos clearly struck a chord with Cara’s future fans, as even some of her oldest videos have since garnered millions of views. Nowadays, other people are covering her songs!

As a musician, you need things to draw on when writing a song. For Alessia Cara, it appears she decided to draw on her real life experiences when jotting down the lyrics to the hit single “Here”. Cara wrote the song when she was just 16 and based the lyrics on an actual party she had then-recently attended. As is reflected in the songs lyrics, Cara never wanted to be at the party and mainly stuck to uncomfortably chilling in the corner. Little did she know that this innocuous party would serve as the catalyst for her burgeoning musical career!
