Did you know that ‘Here’ Is based on a true story? For this list, we’ll be taking a look at some fun facts related to Canadian singer/songwriter Alessia Cara.
#5: She Got Her Start By Posting Covers of Songs on YouTube
All musicians have to start somewhere. For Alessia Cara, that somewhere was YouTube. At just 13 years of age she started her own YouTube channel. The future Def Jam singer would post covers of songs by the likes of Justin Timberlake and Amy Winehouse as a way of practicing her craft while simultaneously growing her fan base. The videos were occasionally recorded inside of her closet because she didn’t want to annoy the rest of her family! Talk about modest beginnings. The videos clearly struck a chord with Cara’s future fans, as even some of her oldest videos have since garnered millions of views. Nowadays, other people are covering her songs!#4: She Has A "Happy Moments" Jar
Staying positive can be a difficult task. However, Alessia Cara seems to have tackled the problem head on; she keeps a “happy moments” jar. Whenever something good happens to her she writes it down on a piece of paper and places it inside the jar. When the end of the year rolls around she opens it and re-lives all of her recent positive experiences. Talk about a totally cute and fun way to remember the year’s best moments! Cara might just be on to something…#3: She's Great at Celebrity Impersonations
Everyone has a hidden skill; that one thing they bust out at parties that wows their friends and wins over the crowd. Given that her singing ability is already public knowledge, Alessia Cara’s hidden talent appears to be celebrity impressions, but we think that cat might be out of the bag too! It all started when she posted a video to her YouTube channel showing off her hilariously on-point impersonations of people like Ariana Grande, Lorde and Nicki Minaj; and who knows, she may be collaborating with some of them in the near future! With well over 3 million views, the video is one of the singers all-time most popular.#2: Singing Wasn’t Always in the Cards
Growing up, Cara wasn’t always 100% sure she wanted to be a singer. In fact, her original dream was to become a visual artist. She loved making crafts and painting and felt strongly that that’s what she’d be doing when she grew up. Either way, Cara’s career path differs greatly from the rest of her family, whom she says are primarily hairdressers and construction workers. It begs the question, where did all of that musical inspiration come from? The answer? No idea! But Alessia Cara wound up embracing the talents she was given, and the airwaves are clearly better for it.#1: ‘Here’ Is Based on a True Story
As a musician, you need things to draw on when writing a song. For Alessia Cara, it appears she decided to draw on her real life experiences when jotting down the lyrics to the hit single “Here”. Cara wrote the song when she was just 16 and based the lyrics on an actual party she had then-recently attended. As is reflected in the songs lyrics, Cara never wanted to be at the party and mainly stuck to uncomfortably chilling in the corner. Little did she know that this innocuous party would serve as the catalyst for her burgeoning musical career!Have an idea you want to see made into a WatchMojo video?
