For this list, we’re looking at interesting pieces of information about this CW musical comedy.
#5: The Show Title Was Very Intentional
Some viewers and even fans have questioned the use of the word “crazy” in the title of the show to describe its main character. It has been debated that labeling Rebecca Bunch as “crazy” reflects negatively on how people perceive women. The show’s creator however, totally disagrees and has revealed that the wording of the title was well thought out. She wanted to address the negative stereotype head on by making viewers wonder if women they had previously called “crazy” had perhaps been put in negative situations by men which caused their erratic behavior.
#4: It Has Beaten the Odds
“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” has been a critical darling since it first aired. The first season holds a 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes while the second season has the honor of a much-coveted 100 percent rating. Despite glowing reviews, the show gets extremely low viewership numbers. In fact, as of 2017 it is considered the lowest rated show on broadcast television. One writer at Vox even claims that “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” may be the lowest rated show of all time to actually be renewed for a new season. What’s keeping it alive in this ratings obsessed world? A dedicated fan-base and, according to CW president Mark Pedowitz, the fact that this award-winning show helps strengthen the CW’s reputation.
#3: It's Loosely Based on Real Life
Show creator Rachel Bloom admits that many of the storylines on her show parallel situations she has dealt with in real life. She says that her character, Rebecca, mirrors her real personality in many ways but that the major difference is that in real life, she is married. Her husband is Dan Gregor, who has written for the show and actually made an appearance in the first season. One other major difference she mentions is that her real parents are still together and are very supportive, in contrast to the fictional ones she has on the show.
#2: Several Actors Have Thriving Musical Theatre Careers
Rachel Bloom knew she wanted her show to be a musical, so the initial concept was to somehow incorporate show business into the plot to make that a reality. The plan changed however and they decided to make the show about someone who imagines their life is a musical. To make it as authentic as possible, the creators cast some actors who have real life experience on Broadway and beyond. Donna Lynne Champlin (who plays Paula), Santino Fontana (who plays Greg) and Vincent Rodriguez III (who plays Josh) have all had varying roles in the world of musical theatre.
#1: Bloom Worked To Banish Body Standards
When her show was first greenlit, sources say that Rachel Bloom had initially planned to work with a personal trainer to get into top shape for filming. Gotta have that television bod, right? She ultimately opted out of it though, preferring to show her body as it was on TV rather than perpetuating unattainable body image standards for women. Throughout the show and in her social media posts, she has continued to encourage feminist ideals by demystifying female beauty rituals and making light of topics related to body image.
