Top 5 Reasons to Watch “Sierra Burgess Is a Loser”

This adorable Netflix rom com should definitely be on your “to watch” list. Welcome to MsMojo and today we're counting down our picks for the Top 5 Reasons to Watch “Sierra Burgess Is a Loser.”

For this list, we’re looking at all the most compelling things about this Netflix movie.

#5: The Writer Is an up & Coming Female Artist

While many films like this one are based on popular young adult novels, "Sierra Burgess Is a Loser" is based on an original screenplay by Lindsey Beer. You may not have heard of Lindsey Beer before this, but you’ll definitely be hearing about her now. Beer, who already was involved in the writing development phase for “Transformers: The Last Knight,” will reportedly have a writer credit on the “Dungeons & Dragons” reboot, Quentin Tarantino’s “Star Trek” film, “The Kingkiller Chronicle” adaptation, “Chaos Walking” and “Godzilla vs. Kong.” That’s a LOT of nerd cred. Because of her newbie status, she also has time to engage with her fans, and started a poll for people to vote on a popular character’s last name.

#4: The Music

It seems like the score and soundtrack of this movie are going to be important based on who they have involved in the production. Leland, also known as Brett McLaughlin, and Bram Inscore are teaming up for this venture. Though you may not know their names, they’re responsible for tracks by Selena Gomez, Daya, and Troye Sivan, who additionally co-wrote 3 songs on “Sierra Burgess Is a Loser”’s soundtrack. Not to mention, lead actress Shannon Purser is actually credited with singing one of the songs on the soundtrack, and we know she has an incredible singing voice to back up her acting talents.

#3: The Main Leads’ Chemistry

"Sierra Burgess Is a Loser" stars Shannon Purser and Noah Centineo (which we’ll delve into more later), and though the two hadn’t worked together before, they formed a quick connection on set -- which, considering they often had scenes where they were just on the phone together, could have been difficult. Centineo said in an interview with “Entertainment Tonight”: “We were both on other ends of the phone, and I was just in a different room. And it wasn't even acting. You're sitting there talking and it's like, someone you have a true connection with.” People may be busy shipping him with his “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before” costar Lana Condor, but who knows what’ll happen when this movie is released!

#2: It's a Modern Retelling

While this Netflix film is based on Beer’s original screenplay, it takes inspiration from some unconventional source material. It’s a modern retelling of “Cyrano de Bergerac,” an 1897 stage play by Edmond Rostand, about a poetic man who falls in love, but is too afraid to pursue it because he’s unattractive. "Sierra Burgess Is a Loser"’s plot takes the broad strokes of this story and adapts it for the modern era, with all the accompanying technology. Beer peppered in an ‘80s feel as well, saying to Glamour, “I wanted it to feel like a little bit of an ode to those eighties movies the same way Stranger Things is an ode to eighties movies.” That shouldn’t be hard to execute with this movie’s cast!

#1: The Cast Is Full of Recognizable Faces

Speaking of the cast, the film’s stars, Shannon Purser and Noah Centineo, are the biggest draw for audiences, due to their roles in the hugely popular “Stranger Things”, “Riverdale,” and “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before.” Yeah, we’re still on the Centineo train. But even the supporting cast is full of familiar actors. Chrissy Metz of “This is Us” fame plays popular girl Veronica’s mom, while Sierra’s parents are played by ‘80s darlings Lea Thompson, who played Lorraine in “Back to the Future,” and Alan Ruck, who was Cameron in “Ferris Bueller.” Sierra’s bestie will be portrayed by RJ Cyler, who you might remember from his roles in “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” and “Power Rangers.” That’s an epic cast!
