Admittedly, “The Sims” does not force any stakes upon the player. For the most part, it is a chill game with goofy characters, and it features a ton of options for players to decorate their homes. But if money is preventing you from fully enjoying your dream home, there is a cheat to mitigate that. Go to the cheat menu and type in “rosebud” for an instant one thousand Simoleans. And if you want more than that at a time, add a semicolon and exclamation mark at the end of “rosebud” per thousand Simoleans. The PS2 version has an alternative to this cheat; type in “freeall” to completely tank the economy by making all objects cost nothing.
Look, we know not everyone is great when it comes to the “Tony Hawk” games. Combos can be tough to pull off, and sometimes, the levels give you a hard time completing certain tasks. That is why so many of us were willing to cheat just to have the full experience. C’mon, you can’t blame anyone for instantly maxing out stats or unlocking all levels and skaters. If you want the challenge and struggle with base stats, then more power to you. Some of us simply wanted to skate around as Wolverine or Darth Maul. Is that really too much to ask?
Speaking of demanding games, “Twisted Metal” is known to get ridiculously hard, especially when it feels like all of the other cars are gunning for you and only you. The PS1 games and “Black” are the most notorious as some vehicles in the games aren’t quite balanced. Do you think we hesitated when we learned the codes for invincibility? Of course not! “Twisted Metal” is a game of vengeance, suffering, and cheating AI! We were willing exploit anything just to unlock all of the cars, and most of you probably did the same.
For clarification, we are specifically talking about the TT Games “Lego” titles. These are the kinds of games that are pretty fun to use cheat codes with. In addition to housing a buffet of codes to unlock characters, the Lego games also boast neat extras that bring a bit of goofy charm to the games. Some codes will put mustaches on every character. Some will help you track down minikits easier. And others can power up your attacks or replace weapons with brooms, bananas, and other ridiculous objects. The best part is that some of these games will keep these extras on in cutscenes, which only enhances the rare dramatic scenes.
Now, why would anyone dare try to cheat a game as easy and basic as “Battle for Bikini Bottom”? Well, for the simple fact that these cheat codes can either make the game a tad harder or break the game’s economy. “Battle for Bikini Bottom” does have a few mundane cheat codes that can alter the size of NPCs or change camera controls. However, the codes everyone is mostly using are the ones that instantly grant a thousand Shiny Objects, instant Golden Spatulas, smacking civilians for bonus Shiny Objects, or to have SpongeBob’s booty exposed for the whole game.
“The Force Unleashed” lives up to its name by granting you some wild lightsaber attacks and Force abilities to decimate enemies. But if you wanted pure, unadulterated violence and explosions, the cheat codes here came in handy. We’re talking maxed out stats, unlimited Force energy, and codes that unlock each new attack. And just to sweeten the experience, there were a large handful of codes that could turn you into different characters. Now, you can tear the galaxy a new one as Proxy or even a dopey Stormtrooper.
While “Hit & Run” doesn’t have quite the laundry list of codes like some of our other entries, it makes up for it in how it changes driving around Springfield. There’s a code that overclocks the speed of any vehicle you drive, a code that makes your car jump when you honk, a code that makes any vehicle you hit explode instantly, and yes, even a code that makes your vehicle indestructible. And if you really want to drive like Homer, throw in the code that blurs your vision.
Most of us already know about the hidden playable Green Goblin mode, but the game based on Sam Raimi’s first “Spidey” movie holds other interesting features with its cheats. Many of them are your usual cheats - big head mode, unlimited webbing, level select, level skipping, the works. But other codes allow you to play in first-person view or enable slow motion in combat. And while there are cheat codes that let you play as various NPCs and even the Shocker, the more unique one is “GIRLNEXTDOOR”, which lets you play as MJ herself.
Not only was “GoldenEye” legendary for its innovation on FPS games and home consoles, it also obtained its legendary status in part due to its ridiculous cheats. Again, you had your usual cheats like unlimited ammo, invincibility, and instant unlocks of every level. But then, you had cheats that let you dual-wield every weapon, changed every ammo into paintball pellets, shrunk Agent 007 to the size of an ant, or turned every character into a humanoid Donkey Kong. And for you sadists out there, you all probably enabled invisibility in the multiplayer.
When it comes to cheat codes, “Grand Theft Auto” has proven several times that it is the grandaddy of game-breaking cheat codes, and all it requires is the use of your in-game phone (or traditional button inputs, if you’re playing pre”GTA IV”). There is simply nothing more hilarious than typing in a random phone number to drop a tank onto some poor soul and then, using said tank to obliterate everyone and everything. So, if you wanna get rich quick and burn Liberty City to the ground, well, the virtual world is your oyster.
